| THE DEREK BEAK COLLECTION OF EGYPT. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| The following 129 lots of Egypt largely comprise the extensive and valuable collection formed by the late Derek Beak of Kent. Derek was born in Maidstone in 1933 and spent most of his life in the area, working at the National Provincial Bank before moving on to join a firm of local solicitors. A keen sportsman, Derek was a great cricket fan and loved watching England play Test matches as well as having a passion for motor sport, snooker and tennis. The great love of Derek's life however was philately and since the onset of Multiple Sclerosis some twenty years ago the hobby became (in Derek's own words) "a Godsend". He built up a fine collection of Switzerland which was auctioned in that country during the 1990's and subsequently channelled his philatelic activities into the Egyptian sphere. Derek was deeply religious and a regular member of the congregation at his local church before his confinement to a wheelchair made that an impracticality. He did however manage to continue his worship by listening to the taped service of the previous week every Sunday morning (following the readings and hymns in his own books) as well as helping in the marketing of the cards and notelets by which considerable funds were raised for the church. The following lots give a wonderful opportunity for the philatelic students of this captivating country to add some of Derek's treasures to their own collections.. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
