| 671 | FIRST BURMESE WAR - BRITISH OFFICER's LETTER FROM PROME WHILE BESIEGED BY THE BURMESE ARMY; Very fine 8 Aug. 1825 EL to India from "Prome" endorsed "P[ostage] N[ot] P[aid]" with a very fine "MADRAS/GPO/BEARING POST" transit c.d.s. on the flap. The letter (a family letter to the writer's daughter; full typed transcript) gives an insight into life in the town that the writer's forces had occupied since April, and which had been surrounded by Maha Nemyo's Burmese Force from then onwards. He mentions lost ingoing mail; "...a dawk canoe...was attacked by pirates about a fortnight since, who plundered the mail", the problems of fever among the men ("Two deaths today and one yesterday"), the departure the previous day of a "war boat" and some Europeans to a mid-point for negotiations of a truce, and quoting Lord Amherst's recent comment to the writer that he wished to be lenient and not "place his foot on their necks". By the time the letter was received (26 Oct.), preparations were under way for the Battle of Prome which took place at the end of Nov. and led directly to the end of the 1st Burmese War. Amusing and historical letter; early Burma Campaign letters are seldom seen. PHOTO | £300 | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
