Lyth" - the well known Missionary in Fiji in the 1840's - to the Wesleyan Missions Society in London, having a fine red oval 10 Oct. "PAID SHIP LETTER/(Crown)/SYDNEY" transit d.s. on the front & 26th Feb. 1844 London arrival c.d.s. on the flap. The "3[d]" outgoing NSW rate was prepaid & the "8[d]" British arrival Ship Letter charge was levied; this letter was 7 months in transit. Rare thus. Contents are significant because they are from 'Hitchins & Co.' and give details of 6 months' forwarding agency work for Huth & Co. totalling '£19-12s-10d"; the accompanying hand-written letter explains the 'Commercial Rooms' charge which was an important sum to subsidise the system of last minute despatch of letters to Port Royal via the Rooms. Unique insight into the letter forwarding system used in Jamaica. £100
