SLAVE TRADE - " THE LAST VOYAGE OF THE 'SALLY' ": Substantial group of letters, insurance policies, wage bill & other documents (118) relating to the adventures of the slaving brig 'Sally' during 1806-07 on her voyage between Liverpool, West Africa & the West Indies and subsequent wreck & salvage, researched in formidable detail with supporting transcripts, copies of original records, maps etc. on several hundred large leaves. Built in Maine (USA) in 1794, the 'Sally' was acquired by the Liverpool merchants W. & M. Smith and used for their slaving trade; the documents illustrate a voyage to collect slaves from the 'African Islands' & the Gold Coast and deliver them for sale in Barbados & British Guiana; the ship was caught on rocks off the Cornish coast on its return and part of the correspondence relates to its salvage & repair. The Captain's letters include details of the prices & condition of the unfortunate people alongside those of the other main cargo of ivory and wood; postal markings inc. s/l 'BARBADOES' & 'PADSTOW'. Mixed condition. A significant contribution to the history of the slave trade. (118 items plus extremely extensive research papers). |
