1252 VERY RARE SMALL "SOUTHEND" MARK USED BENEATH A 6d LILAC ON COVER TO BRITISH GUIANA (ARGYLL); 14 Nov. 1857 env. to Demarara (partly fine 23 Dec. backstamp) franked by a 6d lilac PLACED OVER a very fine very rare twin-lined "SOUTHEND" mark (Alcock rarity F); the cover had been endorsed "Paid 6d" at Southend, which clearly was too small a P.O. to have stocks of higher value stamps, and so the stamp was applied at the Head Office at nearby Campbeltown, where the stamp was also tied by a fine "65" numeral. Exceptional usage of a Scots Local in the "stamp position" with a Manuscript "Paid 6d" marking, with the stamp added by the P.O. in transit. Very few examples of this "in-transit-stamping" have been recorded; almost all being from the smaller and remotest Scottish island P.O.'s, with Southend being the only P.O. that we have recorded doing so with a Scots Local cancel in the "stamp position". Exhibition Item. PHOTO £300

Very rare thus. PHOTO £300
1263 VERY RARE SMALL "GLASS" CANCEL (ABERDEEN); c.1856 off-cover 1d "stars" cancelled by two overlapping partly fine but complete strikes of the very rare blue-black "GLASS" cancel (Alcock maximum rarity G, whether in blue or in black). We have only recorded this mark on a single cover. PHOTO £100
1264 RARE SMALL "HAUGHEAD" CANCEL ON COVER WITH RARE EVIDENCE OF MULTI-CANCEL USAGE IN A SINGLE P.O. - HAVING AN OFFSET OF THE LARGE "STEVENSTON" SCOTS LOCAL (BOTH GLASGOW); Remarkable 8 Apr. 1857 E to Liverpool with fine 1d "stars" tied by a very fine rare small boxed "HAUGHEAD" (Alcock rarity F; few known on cover). Most unusually, the top flap of the cover shows a clear black offset of the large Type III "STEVENSTON" Scots Local cancel; this suggests that both the Haughead & Stevenston marks were applied to adjacent covers in a pile at the same time. Tis is clear evidence in our view that at least some of the Glasgow Scots Local cancels were applied, not at each Receiving House, but at the main Glasgow P.O. during final sorting. Important Exhibition Item. PHOTO (lots 1259, 1264 and 1267) £400
