1129 MASHAM - PENNY POSTS & UDC COVERS - INC. RIDE LETTER WITH 1d RED & MANUSCRIPT CANCEL; 17 Aug. 1839 E with v. fine "Masham/Penny Post" (YK1979; rare pre-1840), 1842/4 pair of 1d Red covers (4m & near 3m; both with MC's) having very fine black "Masham/Penny Post" marks on their flaps, and large part 1848 cash-paid E to Middleham with mostly very fine blue UDC's of both "CARLTON-IN-COVERDALE" and "MASHAM". Plus exceptional 6 Dec. 1849 EL from Masham to nearby Ellingstring with v. fine blue "MASHAM" UDC's back and front; originally endorsed "Stamp" with a black manuscript "1", but then a fine 4m 1d Red (partly lifted to show the UDC beneath) was applied over the UDC on the front and cancelled with a manuscript squiggle (in the same ink with which the "1" mark was crossed through). This latter cover is a rare example of a letter hande to a rural postman who took 1d in cash and added a stamp when he reached his village P.O. Both these villages were distant sub-offices of York, but they were much nearer to Whitby, so this letter was treated as a Ride Letter and cancelled at the village to avoid a lengthy southerly detour via York. 1151 VERY EARLY PREPAID LETTER FROM EDINBURGH TO IRELAND ENDORSED "For[war]d. 6" IN LONDON; Attractive 5 Jan. 1712 EL "from "Edr" to Dublin (good long address) with faint oval Edinburgh Bishop Mark on the lower flap and a fine London "IA/11" transit Bishop Mark on the top flap; prepaid (as per regulations) to London with m/s "Pd 6d", and then charged the further 6d from London to Dublin with rare manuscript "For[war]d 6[d]" charge also on the front. INVERNESS PRESTAMP MAIL
1158 THE EARLIEST KNOWN (?) POSTAL ITEM CONNECTED TO INVERNESS - VERY EARLY LETTER FROM DANZIG; 21 Mar 1708 EL (some faults but not really affecting address panel or endorsement) from "Dantzigk" (sic) to Inverness, charged "1N" and then "In all 2N2" (to which was added the Scottish postage of "8[d]"), with a fine London Foreign Branch "MR/29" Bishop Mark (toning) on the top flap. The letter is addressed;"To Sir William Ross of Easterfearn, Sherriff Depute and Comisher of the shire of Ross in Miklollan, to the Care of M. Alexander Stuart in Inverness", and so with a most exceptional P.O. endorsement on the lower flap:- "Inverness 16 Aprill 1708. These are testifieing that Alexr. Stewart, Mer[chan]t here, did pay the postage of this letter; being 34/- Scots, which you will repay him. This is all from , Much Ho[noured Sir], Your humb. ser[van]t, Ro. Tulloh, servt. to ye Post M[aste]r." The final postage charge was 2s-10d (2s-2d + 8d) which equated to 34/- in Scots money because and English 1d was the equivalent of a Scottish shilling at this date. 1159 UNRECORDED MANUSCRIPT "Ins. 4" ON EARLY LETTER FROM POOLEWE TO INVERARY; Fine 19 July 1733 EL from "Pollew" [sic] to "Colonel Campbell of Inveresregan Esqr., To ye care of the Poastmaster [sic] of Inverary" with small manuscript "4" charge in addition to a clear manuscript "Ins 4" (filing fold) nicely placed on the front; the routing would have to be via Inverness so this is clearly an Inverness P.O. marking. A remarkably early letter from this small and remote West Coast village; it is thought that two other examples of this manuscript Inverness marking are known - the first recorded Inverness handstruck mark dates from 1741 according to Auckland/Stables. Inside there is a printed "ARREARS OF TAXES/COUNTY OF INVERNESS/LAST NOTICE" claiming £2-8s-1d of back-tax!
