THE RARE USE OF THE SWATOW DATESTAMP CANCELLING A STAMPED COVER; 28th Sept. 1885 env. to Hong Kong "Per S.S. Oapack (?)", franked by Hong Kong 5c blue tied by a very rare Type B "A/SWATOW" c.d.s. with a second very fine strike immediately alongside. Attractive and very rare thus; Webb only recorded one other cover with this datestamp as cancellation and noted that it is rarer than the "S2" cancel; this may therefore be one (and the earliest) of only two recorded covers with this cancellation (at least two examples are recorded as cancellations of Postal Stationery). Exhibition Quality. PHOTO | £750-£1,000 | ||||||||
THE RARE "DATE ABOVE" SWATOW DATESTAMP ON HONG KONG 3c POSTCARD TO U.S.A.; 27th Jan. 1888 usage of the HK 3c PC (minor faults and crayon "X" across the address) to Boston "Via San Francisco" cancelled by a very fine "JA 27/SWATOW/8[8]" Type D c.d.s. The message is an interesting analysis of the "Latest Missionary Statistics from China", giving a total of 1,040 "Foreign Missionaries" in China in 1888. | 430 | UNRECORDED (?) MANUSCRIPT "10 Cents" ENDORSEMENT IN PLACE OF "BOAT OFFICE" MARK ON COVER TO CANTON; 26th Sept. 1834 E from Macao (pencil note) written by "John Seffler (?)" and addressed to W.S.Wetmore at "Canton"; there is the usual Chinese endorsement on the reverse, but also a bold claret-red "10 Cents." endorsement on the flap; the latter is clearly intended to show the rate via the Boat Office, which is usually shown with a strike of the large Type 1 "Boat OFFICE/10 Cents/MACAO" mark. We can find no record of this manuscript mark, though it is earlier than all of the securely dated strikes of the circular Boat Office mark that we have recorded. Presumably this is a forerunner (or an emergency) hand-written charge in the absence of the handstamp. In either case, this is an important addition to the record. Exhibition Quality. PHOTO | £400-£500 | ||||||||
Similar 27th Sept. 1834 E from Macao (pencil note) - written by "Joseph Archer" - also addressed to Wetmore at Canton, but there is only the Chinese annotation on the flap and no Boat Office mark or endorsement. Fine and attractive. PHOTO | £150-£200 | ||||||||
THE PREVIOUSLY UNRECORDED 2nd-TYPE RED 2-RING "MACAO" DATESTAMP ON COVER TO PORTUGAL VIA EGYPT; 26th/28th July 1861 E (minor reinforcing in places) from Macao to Lisbon "Por Alexandria" with a mostly very fine strike of the very rare red 2-ring "MACAO/[28/7]/18[61]" partly manuscript datestamp on the top flap, very slightly overstruck by the Lisbon arrival d.s. (25th Sept.). While this c.d.s. closely resembles Webb's 1853 Type 8 (of which only one example has been recorded, dated 24th Dec. 1853; see his Plate 58), close examination reveals that this mark is different from Webb Type 8; it has radial divisions in place of the asterisks, and the word "MACAO" is much shorter than that in Type 8, although both marks have the same 24mm diameter. One other example of this new mark (which should be Type 8a) is known, also dated 1861 and also from this correspondence (see Frazao, p.338). There are also very fine Lisbon handstruck "300" and boxed "POR ALEXANDRIA" marks on the front. An Important Addition to the Record, and one of the Rarest of all Macao marks; only two examples recorded. Exhibition Quality. [Ex Ishikawa, 1980]. PHOTO | £3,000-£4,000 | ||||||||
THE VERY RARE BRITISH POST OFFICE USAGE OF A CROWNED CIRCLE WITH PORTUGUESE WORDING - THE "PAGO/EM/MACAO" CROWNED CIRCLE ON COVER TO PORTUGAL VIA EGYPT; 4th Feb. 1873 EL (minor faults and small ink marks barely detract) from "Macao" to Lisbon "Per via Suez" with a superb strike of the very rare British P.O. "PAGO/EM/MACAO" Crowned Circle mark, nicely placed on the front along with a matching very fine British P.O. "B/MACAO" c.d.s. (Webb Type B; very rare), with a fine black "60" Lisbon arrival charge-mark. There is also a blurred March 1873 Lisbon arrival c.d.s. on the reverse. Few examples of this attractive mark - used by the British P. O. in Macao but with the wording in Portuguese - have been recorded (Frazao illustrates only 10 covers and does not record this one). It is interesting to note that the Macao P.O. was run by the British right through until 1884 (see Webb p.293.), although it used a few marks with Portuguese wording. One of the rarest of all Crowned Circles; a Spectacular and Important Exhibition Item. PHOTO | £8,000-£10,000 | ||||||||

| 436 | THE FAMOUS AND UNIQUE 2-RING "LABUAN" DATESTAMP COVER WITH HONG KONG ADHESIVES TIED BY "B62" NUMERALS - ADDRESSED TO NEW ZEALAND; The Spectacular 27th July 1864 envelope (minor wear; top right corner cut away) from the "Stafford" Correspondence, sent from "LABUAN" (superb and very rare 2-ring red "JULY.27/1864" c.d.s. nicely placed on the front) to "Nelson, New Zealand, Via Hong Kong", and therefore correctly franked by a Hong Kong 8c pale orange pair, each cancelled by five red ink-strokes and also tied by two superb blue Hong Kong "B62" numerals (a further stamp - presumably a third 8c - has been cut away from the top right of the cover well over 50 years ago, but the marvellous appearance of this cover is hardly affected). There are two blue "HONG·KONG" c.d.s.'s of 8th Aug. 1864 on the reverse, and there are fine to very fine c.d.s.'s of "AUCKLAND/NEW ZEALAND" (4th Nov.) and "NELSON/NEW ZEALAND" (10th Nov.) on the front. Under the flap is a P.S.; "I have only shot two pigs since I came here."! This is the only recorded Labuan cover with Hong Kong adhesives cancelled with the "B62" numerals, and it is a Highly Important Exhibition item for both Hong Kong and Labuan collectors. It has been illustrated in numerous handbooks/articles, including in Webb (Plate 37). Only three other covers and one front are recorded with this Labuan datestamp; at least one has Indian stamps cancelled in Singapore, and those with Hong Kong stamps do not have B62 cancels (one is illustrated in Webb, Plate 37).
