There are 3 adverts; for a Coal Saver, a Religious Journal and for Self-inking Rubber Stamps; the latter is illustrated and was inserted by the publisher himself. The message is from "J.M." | 2431 | RARE FIRST DAY OF 4d POSTAGE PERIOD COVER TO FRANCE; 5 Dec. 1839 EL (clearly dated inside and on filing note) from London to "St. Peray, France", having a light but readily legible 5th Dec. 1839 (First Day of 4d Postage) "LONDON/F.B.O." c.d.s. on the top flap, with Calais (7 Dec.) and St. Peray (10 Dec.) c.d.s.'s. Charged "10" (British postage to France) and then "31" (31 decimes; 10 for the british postage plus 21 more decimes from Calais to St. Peray. This letter makes the point very neatly that France was still charging very high internal postal rates on the very day that British rates were reduced to a mere 4d per ‡oz regardless of distance. Very rare; we have only recorded four overseas letters (ingoing and outgoing) dated on 5th Dec. 1839. PHOTO | £500
RARE PREPAID 1d-POST COVER TO ROME VIA FRANCE; 28 Dec. 1839 EL prepaid 2s-6d from "Hawkshead" to Rome with a very fine "Hawkshead/Penny Post" (Westmoreland; rare pre-1840 usage) nicely placed on the front with "VIA DI/BEAUVOISIN", etc. Transit marks include Ambleside, London, Calais & Rome (11 Jan. 1840) datestamps. Rare thus; Penny Post covers are rare to overseas destinations, especially during the 4d-Post Period, when the local 1d rate only applied to foreign mail such as this. Exhibition Item. | 2433 | COVER FROM INDIA RECEIVED & REDIRECTED DURING 4d POST PERIOD: 1839 (1 May) EL (various faults do not detract) from 'Fort William' (India) to London bearing (on top flap) fine red framed "CALCUTTA/G. P. O./SHIP LETTER/20 JU 20/1839" and on the front fine red "INDIA LETTER/ DOVER", received in London on 15 Dec. and redirected the next day to Baldock (Hertfordshire); charged '8' to reflect 4d for India letter + 4d inland to London and '4' representing additional charge for redirection. PHOTO | £120 | ||||||||||
VERY HIGH 2s-8‡d RATE FOR A LETTER TO GREECE VIA FRANCE; Fine 16 Dec. 1839 EL from "The Rookery" (near Dorking in Surrey, but posted from London with fair red "T…P/Connaught St" mark on flap) to Athens "via Marseille", with two London datestamps as well as a very fine red "G…P/PAID" in circle and very fine red oval "P-D." marks on the front. Unusual rate; 10d to France plus 1s-10‡d French postage. The only 4d-Post Period cover to Greece that we can recall having seen. PHOTO | £100 | ||||||||||
RARE PREPAID LETTER FROM YORKSHIRE TO BELGIUM; 20 Dec. 1839 EL (minor flap faults) prepaid "2/1" to Bruges with two mostly very fine red oval "PAID/AT/WAKEFIELD" marks on the front. The rate was made up of 1s-4d foreign postage to Belgium via France, plus the mileage-based 9d inland rate to London (being the old 11d rate less the "1812 Reduction" of 2d). This cover clearly illustrates the crazy system which only lasted during the 5-week 4d-Post period, whereby the inland postage of overseas letters was usually much higher than that of the same day's mail to inland addresses! PHOTO | £100 | ||||||||||
4d-POST PERIOD "FREE" FRONTS & CORNISH MANUSCRIPT "4" COVER, ETC.; Fine 30 Dec. 1839 EL to Plymouth with neat manuscript "4" and fine blue "CAMBORNE" mark; plus part Newcastle on Tyne E with m/s "4", and 12 free fronts sent during Dec. 1839 & early Jan. 1840 during the 4d-Post Period inc. one sent on the First Day (5th Dec.), one with cancelled "FREE" d.s. and local London "2" charge, and one with Rochdale manuscript "4" applied in error and cancelled. Rare thus and of Exhibition Quality. PHOTO | £120 | ||||||||||

2nd DAY COVER OF UNIFORM PENNY POSTAGE REDIRECTED AND OVERCHARGED; 11 Jan. 1840 EL from Liverpool to London with a fine red 11 Jan. 1840 "LIVERPOOL" c.d.s. on the front matching the very fine Handstruck "1" mark alongside; the letter was redirected from London to Crawley on 13 Jan. 1840 and there is a clear black manuscript "2" charge, which was technically incorrect, although the single rate redirection charge was not confirmed officially by the P.O. until 24 Feb. 1840, after which all redirected mail was only charged a single rate of postage until the 1890s. Very rare short-lived P.O. "Error" and possibly the earliest recorded U.P.P. redirected cover. PHOTO | £150 | ||||||||||
EARLY UNIFORM 1d POSTAGE COVER WITH INCORRECT "MORE TO PAY" CHARGE OF 1d INSTEAD OF 2d!; 8 Feb. 1840 EL from London to Edinburgh, prepaid 1d (red manuscript "1"), but clearly weighing above the " ounce and so with a fine red 2-ring London "MORE/TO/PAY" mark with a black manuscript "1" charge alongside. The rules were clear; a fine was due as well as the underpaid postage on this kind of letter, but in this early 1840 example the London P.O. (and then the Edinburgh P.O.) seems to have got it wrong. A rare P.O. undercharge! PHOTO - see plate no.1nt> | £150 | ||||||||||

VERY EARLY LETTER SENT FROM LONDON TO ITALY BY "GALLEY"; 4 Apr. 1472 EL (very fine with fine paper wafer-seal still attached on reverse; written in Italian but with full typed translation) headed from "L[ondr]a" inside and addressed (in translation); "To the worthy masters Pietro Maurazeno and Partners, Venice", most unusally endorsed on the address-panel; "R. adi 6 Majo 1472 da Londra di Antonio Zustignian" [= "Received on 6 May 1472 from London, from Master Anonio Zustignian"]. The contents mention cloth prices in "Essex...Southampton and Plympton" and an order "to get so much [Plympton cloth] or Essex..." The last line of the letter reveals how this letter was carried to Italy:- "This Galley from the Thames is being got ready and will shortly be able to leave..." Very rare letter of the Highest Exhibition Quality, dated some 100 years earlier than the vast majority of available British Postal History. PHOTO | £1000 | ||||||||||
VERY RARE LETTER SENT BY CORSINI HIMSELF FROM LONDON TO VENICE WITH POSTAL RATE AND COLOGNE ROUTING ENDORSEMENT; 5 Jan. 1593/4 EL (minor flap faults and with some internal ink-etching, but complete and with full typed translation) clearly signed "Bart. Corsini In Londra" and sealed with a 70%-cmplete red wax seal with Corsini's own guild-mark; addressed "To the Magnificent Stefano Patti In Venice" (Corsini's cousin) and conveniently endorsed "Londra dated 5 January, Received 11 February 1593 [= 1594]" on the top flap. In addition - and of great Postal History importance - are the Postal endorsements "Sh 6" and "da Collog[n]a" on the front; these indicate that the letter was sent via Collogne and charged 6 Schillings by the Continental Thurn and Taxis postal service. Wheras several hundred letters have survived that were addressed to Corsini, only 11 letters sent BY him are recorded (discovered in 1966 and sold in a RL PH auction on 13 April 1967) of which only one other had postal marks. The letter regards a fellow merchant about to travel from London to Italy via Calais. It seems clear that Corsini had access to the Thurn and Taxis mail service - probably by means of his own regular couriers from London to Collogne - and this is one of only two pre-1630 outgoing letters from Britain with postal markings/rates that we have recorded. Highly Important British P.H. Exhibition Item. PHOTO | £1500 | ||||||||||
THE MATCHING COVER SENT BY STEFANO PATTI IN VENICE TO B. CORSINI IN LONDON; 21 Dec. 1590 EL (very fine; in Italian but with full typed translation and transcript) clearly signed "di Venetia All 21 Decembrio 1590, Steffano Patti" and addressed "Alli Magri Sri Barttollomeo Corsini & Comp., Londra", without postal markings but with large part original red wax seal. The long and interesting letter concerns the illegal (?!) confiscation of an Italian ship (the "Salvegna" and its cargo) in an English port, which has led to the Venetian "Collegio" to write "to Her Sacred Majesty" [i.e. Queen Elizabeth I] to complain! Marvellous matching item to the previous lot, being sent in the opposite direction across Europe.PHOTO | £200 | ||||||||||

Juan vander Beuquon, Marchant In Anvers" with a clear manuscript "1 Sch" [= 1 Schilling to pay] Postal Charge on the front. Foreign mail sent during the main English Civil War period is very rare. PHOTO - see plate no.1 | £500
