Freeling", himself - inviting the addressee to dinner! The address-panel is also signed "Freeling" and so there is a very fine red "(Crown)/To be/delivered/Free" mark with octagonal frame nicely placed on the front. Excellent - and very rare - example of the Abuse of the Franking Privilege by someone at the very top of the Post Office organisation! PHOTO £240
"TO PAY 2d ONLY" etc. MARKS INC. RARE RED STRIKE: 1812 EL to Oswestry bearing a partly fine "TO PAY/ONLY/2D" in lozenge-shaped black frame, 1838 EL from Chigwell to Oswestry with very fine lozenge-framed "TO PAY/2d/ONLY" [Jay L8086 but IN RED - unrecorded thus by Jay & Lovegrove] plus a matching black example on 1832 'Free' E to Edinburgh and 1838 front to Brighton bearing "R·L" (=Ride Letter), handstruck "2" and black "TO PAY/2d/ONLY" in chamfered frame. 2401 RARE FRANKED COVER FROM THE OUTER HEBRIDES TO LONDON WITH THE "UIST to/DUNVEGAN" MARK; 1 July 1836 EL (fine) from "North Uist" (folded neatly to show this internal heading beside the address-panel and postal marks) to the Army's "Paymaster General, London", endorsed "Chelsea Pensioner's Affidavit"; having a superb (for this) strike of the very rare Guaranteed Post "UIST to/DUNVEGAN" mark (struck at Lochmaddy) on the flap, and a very fine red 13 July London crpowned "FREE" aerival c.d.s. on the front. One of the earliest known strikes of this rare Uist mark (issued in Aug. 1835) and very rare on Free mail. [If not sent Free, this letter would have been charged 1s-6‡d per sheet; the highest inland rate to London.] PHOTO £300
VERY RARE FREE FRANK ADDRESSED TO THE YOUNG QUEEN VICTORIA HERSELF FROM IRELAND; 1 Aug. 1838 part entire addressed to "Her most Gracious Majesty Queen Victria, London" having a nearly fine "STRABANE" c.d.s. (crease) on the flap, and so with fair Dublin (2 Aug.) and fine London (4 Aug.) Crowned red "FREE" datestamps on the front. Exceptional; only two or three examples of mail sent by post to the Queen prior to 1840 have been recorded in private hands. The monarch was entitled to the full Franking Privilege, but she always paid her own postage after the Reforms of 1839/40. PHOTO £300
REDIRECTED "NEW ROMNEY/INDIA LETTER" FROM A SHIP AT C.G.H. TO AN M.P. WITH "FREE" MARKS; Unusual 15 Oct. 1839 EL (interesting family letter destined for the M.P.'s daughter!) from "H.M.S. Melville, Simons Bay, Cape of Good Hope" to an M.P. in London, with a very fine boxed "NEW ROMNEY/INDIA LETTER" on the top flap and charged "8"; but the charge was crossed out (wrongly?) and mostly very fine single/double ring London crowned "FREE" marks (morning & evening duties) were struck over the charge, the letter being redirected Free to "Dorking". Rare thus; Free marks on overseas mail struck during the 4d-Post Period are very rare. PHOTO £150
VERY RARE 11th JAN. 1840 EXAMPLE OF LONDON's "FREE" MARK ON MISSENT MAIL; 9 Jan. 1840 free front sent from "Bedford" to London but endorsed (partly erased red manuscript) "Mifsent to Hitchin" along the top, with a fine "HITCHIN/JA 10/1840" c.d.s. ("0" added in contemporary manuscript - presumably the Hitchin P.O. had only one zero in their postmark kit and that was used in the year-date until a fiurther zero slug was obtained). Following this delay, the letter was delivered to London the next day and so there is a very fine London 2-ring crowned "FREE" c.d.s. of "11 JA 11/1840" neatly struck in the centre. Very rare; we have only recorded one other London Free mark dated after 10 Jan. 1840 on mail that was still circulating in the post, having originally been posted before that famous date when Free franking was abolished. There was no example of this type of Money Order - the direct ancestor of the 1881 Postal Order in many ways - in the Vivien Sussex auction (Cavendish March 2002), in which the two Proofs of this design sold for £5,060 & £2,530. Most Attractive Exhibition Item. PHOTO £2000
