** 1916 RARE LADO ENCLAVE EXPEDITION LETTER: 1904 (18.May) 8‡pp letter written on board HHS 'Hannak' by Camel Corps officer Bertram Romilly, returning from Shambi to Omdurman from a secret mission to Bahr el Ghazal against Belgian encroachment in the guise of a 'scientific mission' under Captain Lemaire: "a certain Belgian had established himself on our territory...he was gathering enormous amounts of supplies...causing a lot of trouble with the natives who wanted our protection and refused to go...We were sent up to 'avert an incident'...to fight if possible but not to fire the first shot..." ending with the request " Please treat all I've written in strictest confidence. nothing is known of it ...in England & I should get in to an awful row if it leaked out through me". Much incidental detail about travelling on a Nile Steamer and the general life of a British officer in the Sudan. Enclosed in an envelope to the writer's father in London, the 1p stamp postmarked on arrival at Omdurman on 29. May. A rare item from a period of territorial dispute with Belgian forces in Sudan. Transcript & historical notes enclosed. £300
** 1917 CAMEL CORPS OFFICER, 1904-05: Four items from the Romilly correspondence to London concerning the life of a Camel Corps officer at the beginning of the century, written between 21.March 1904 and 11. May 1905 from Omdurman, El Odaiya & Kordofan detailing various missions, marsh travel, hunting expeditions...and stitching up a camel's torn testicles! Some have ink sketches inc. a map of the Kordofan area, the HQ hut at El Odaiya & antelope skulls. A fascinating group. (4 items). £300
** 1918 THE TALODI INCIDENT, June 1906: Two letters from the Romilly correspondence, the first from El Obeid (2.June) concerning Bertram Romilly's cancelled leave and abrupt departure for an unknown destination and the second (9.June) from Gebel Kadugli:"we had a post cut up by Arabs at Talodi...two Egyptian officers murdered. We've got a fair force - 200 C.Corps, 150 Infantry...we hope to get a chance of going for these fellows & taking blood for blood in order to reestablish our prestige...both Nubas ...& Arabs are helping in hunting these fellows". Both enclosed in envelope to London franked with 5m stamp with retta cancellation and backstamped in transit at Khartoum (27. June). A rare letter from this Sudanese skirmish.
