PPC of the Expedition's Ship "Deutschland" to Berlin (part address excised) franked at top left by the red Expedition label tied by fine purple "Polarschiff Deutschland/Sud Georgien/Grytviken/30 November" and with Falkland Islands 1d red in the opposite corner tied by a light two-ring "SOUTH GEORGIA" c.d.s. of 6 December. 1488 THE BRITISH PACKET BOAT 'HORNET' MISSES THE MAILS AT MONTEVIDEO : ORIGINAL CORRESPONDENCE (1836) small, manuscript archive on 13 pages of official writing paper 13" x 8", comprising : a) Autograph letter signed, 21 April 1836, from the British Consul, Thomas Samuel Hood, notifying Rear Admiral Sir Graham Hamond that the 'Hornet' had failed to collect the mails when departing from Montevideo. b) Further, lengthy A.L.S., 13 June 1836 from Hood to the Admiral describing the circumstances and enclosing copy and translation of related letter from the Montevideo Postmaster General. Providing most interesting and detailed information on the working of a 'branch' packet boat. Diplomatic correspondence with no postal markings. £80
1489 PIONEER TRANSATLANTIC STEAMER COVER - ENDORSED "PER SIRIUS" FROM NEW YORK TO LONDON VIA FALMOUTH ON THE MAIDEN WEST-TO-EAST VOYAGE; 1 May 1838 EL (the two halves separated to assist display of internal heading beside the address-panel and arrival marks) from "New York" to London clearly endorsed "Pr. Sirius" with a mostly very fine red boxed downward-step-type "SHIP LETTER/FALMOUTH" mark on the top flap beside a very fine red London 21 May arrival c.d.s. This letter was carried on the First West-to-East Crossing of the Atlantic made by a Steamship, the S.S. "Sirius". 1509 CHILE - TESTART: 1927 Group of five covers (slight faults) flown between Santiago & Valparaiso and each bearing one of the 'Testart' surcharges in conjunction with one ot two other adhesives in each case. 1510 CHILE - CRASH MAIL: 1937 Env. to U.S.A. franked with 2p airmail adhesive, two other stamps having been washed away, with black four line "Recovered from/Plane N.C. 15065/Aug.3, 1937/Cristobal, C. Z." cachet. This cover was carried on the Panagra Sikorsky S.43 which crashed at Cristobal, Canal Zone. £60
1511 CHINA: 1938 First flight Kweiyang to Hong Kong. A cover intended for the inaugral flight on the Hong Kong - Chungking route in December 1937. The return flight missed out Kweiyang and the covers that had been prepared were held until the flight actually took place on May 17th 1938. Thus the cover is cancelled on 16th Dec 1937 and backstamped at Kwieyang in January & twice in February when the flight was expected. An arrival backstamp of Hong Kong is dated 18 may 1938. Only 68 covers were carried and only 48 bear the fancy cachet in Chinese commemorating the flight. One for the specialist. PHOTO - see plate £120
1512 CHINA: 1939-57 A group of 4 covers, with 1939 from the Greek Consulate in Konigsberg Germany to Shanghai with airmail label obliterated at Hong Kong(McQueen 243), a 1939/40 cover from a French Infantryman at TienTsin to France with French & Hong Kong censor tapes, "AV2" pencilled and Military cachet struck on reverse and a blue-green circular "Air Transit/6" cachet on front. An opened out 1946 "V-Mail" letter from Shanghai with USA 3c adhesive (cancelled in London) and China defins cancelled Shanghai, redirected from Holland to Cheltenham. Violet cachet on reverse "RECEIVED/23 MAY 1946/U.N.R.R.A./MAIL UNIT". Also a 1957 Hong Kong aerogramme with "Hong Kong" deleted, from Peking (Swedish Embassy) to France and bilingual red cachet "Air Mail via Moscow". Four interesting items for the specialist. £120

1514 CHINA: 1939 Opened out cover from Shanghai to Gloucestershire franked 3 China air vals on reverse and with the large blue crossed "PAR AVION" white label on front, this with violet handstamps "By Air France Line from Hong Kong" & "Correspondence réexpédier par voie/aérienne a partir de Marseilles". The cover is endorsed "Air France per S.S. Empress of Japan"; indicating that due to the war between Japan & China airmails had been suspended and the cover had to do part of the route by sea.
