TRISTAN DA CUNHA
688 PRESTAMP LETTER FROM AUSTRALIA TO G.B. WITH RARE EYE-WITNESS DESCRIPTION OF A STOP AT TRISTAN; 15th Dec. 1849 EL (some toning mostly affecting the address side) from "On board the Hamlet, Port Phillip" (Victoria) to the writer's parents in London, charged "8" with faint Melbourne & London datestamps on the flap. The contents are a long and amusing account of the writer's 104-day voyage from England and his first impressions of Australia. Of particular importance is his description of the ship's calling at the Island of Tristan da Cunha; "...later [we came to] a small but magnificent volcanic island called Tristan d'Acunha in the midst of the great ocean - towering up to the height of 7,000 feet - the top of the cone being almost constantly swathed in cloud, thro' which occasionally glistened patches of snow on the summit. Here we procured a few sheep & fowls..." The rest of the letter gives details of Port Phillip (and a small sketch), the countryside and Melbourne itself; "it is a wonder for a 10 years growth in numbers, with its suburbs I am told [it totals] about 30,000". He has suffered a bout of food-poisoning; "The worst thing at Melbourne is the water, which is abominable..." Such early mentions of Tristan are very rarely found. Excellent Page One item for any Tristan Collection. PHOTO - see plate no. £240
