482 LAST DAY OF UNIFORM 4d POSTAGE COVER FROM NEWPORT WITH NITON "NO.2" R.H. MARK; 9th Jan. 1840 EL (internal stain does not detract) from "Sand Rock Hotel, Niton, Isle of Wight" to Derby, charged "4" in black (the I.O.W. did not use any handstruck "4" marks) with a faint claret-red "No.2" Receiving House mark (rare) alongside, having a partly fine "NEWPORT/ISLE OF WIGHT" c.d.s. across the join, with a very fine red London "10 JA 10/1840" (First Day of Uniform Penny Postage) c.d.s. on the top flap. 483 1d BLACK COVER FROM "COWES STAMP OFFICE" ORDERING MORE 1d BLACKS!; 9th Feb. 1841 large part EL (complete letter inside, but left hand portion of address sheet and part of address lost) from "Stamp Office, Cowes" to "[Sta]mp Office, Winchester" franked by a 1d Black (NJ, Plate 9; margins in places, showing part of next stamp at top), tied by a very pale pinky-red Maltese Cross with a mostly fine large "COWES" c.d.s. on the top flap. The letter and its date are particularly significant. The text reads:- "Sir, I will thank you to send me twelve sheets of postage lables [sic], 1d, by post. I am Sir, your very obedt. servant, A. Roach." There is pencil note "Sent 10 [sheets]." We believe that the first 1d Reds were used from 10th Feb. 1841, and the fact that Winchester could only send 10 sheets instead of twelve suggests that the new 1d Red supplies were limited. Could this be a Last Day Cover for the "red" Maltese Coss in the Isle of Wight? Fascinating item from the week when 1d Blacks were replaced by 1d Reds. PHOTO - see plate no. £120

493 CIVIL WAR LETTER REF. THE SCOTS INVASION - ADDRESSED TO THE ROYALIST HIDE-OUT ON LAKE DERWENTWATER; Remarkable c.March 1644 EL addressed "To the right worsfull Sir Edward Radclife, baronnet, at the Ile these [be] d[elivere]d." The letter is dated by direct comparison to a similar letter of 24th March 1643/4 sent to the same address (from the same find), and it is clearly written by one of the addressee's retainers on his Northumberland estate at Dilston where Radcliffe's estate and mansion house were sacked by the invading Scots Army. Both were addressed to Radcliffe's other mansion, built on Lord's Isle in Derwnetwater (which was sacked when his descendants backed the wrong side in the 1715 Rebellion and has been a picturesque ruin ever since). This letter is a retainer's plea for help; "...the troupes are bowne [= bound] to eate my meadew and I can keepe noe men, for I had but thre[e] and they [the Scots Army presumably] have gotten one of them, and the other two dar[e] not ly[e] in there beds....send me word what is best to be done....[or else] there is noe other way but to geive them all [= everything]. And they were informed that there was armes aboute your place, and so when we were going to bed, they came and riped [=seized?] all that ever they could, and they [= the arms] were laid in a convenient [= secret] place, and soe they gate [=got] them not....Yours to command in what you please, Gawen Bell." Rare eye-witness account of the Invasion of Northumberland. [With 1988 article about the two letters. Ex James Grimwood-Taylor.] PHOTO - see plate no. £500

Very few examples of this tiny island's UDC are known; it is thought that its P.O. had only opened in circa 1850. PHOTO - plate no 6B £100

(minor creasing and with a closed tear affecting but not disfiguring the printed design) to Scotland, franked (on the back) by a 1d Red "stars" tied by a very fine "WINDERMERE/970" duplex. The front of the env. is completely covered by a very fancy floral illustration in black, framing the red & blue words "The English Lakes Rose" above the words "Part 1". (minor toning) from London (1d Red "stars" tied by diamond numeral) addressed to "Captain Wm. Hardy R.A., Alderney, Channel Islands", but redirected (faint overstruck "ALDERNEY" c.d.s. on the reverse) to "try 9th Battn., R.A., Woolwich, England", with a black manuscript "1[d]" redirection charge of Alderney on the front. The letter was then again redirected from Woolwich to "Crimea" and so with mostly very fine matching orange-red strikes of the boxed London "Returned for/[3] Postage" and "POSTAGE NOT PAID/TO LONDON" marks on the front. Clearly there was no-one at Woolwich prepared to pay the 3d rate to the Crimea (was the other 1d charge overlooked?) and so the letter was returned to its original sender. Very rare early ingoing letter to Alderney with a story; the 3d rate from the Crimea could be left unpaid, but it had to be prepaid for mail sent to the Crimea. PHOTO - plate no 6B £300

The 7d-rate (via Brindisi) is thought only to have lasted for one month (1st Feb. to 1st Mar. 1880), but this cover suggests otherwise. Rare and appealing franking to a rare destination, sent exactly 40 years to the day after the First Postage Stamp was issued. PHOTO - plate no 6B £200

[While there was no more than the standard 4d to pay due from the addressee, the local post service was still underwritten by the local Llaugharne population, so the total cost was above 4d!] The first cover with a 5th Clause Post mark used during the 4d Postage Period that we can recall having seen. PHOTO - see plate no. £120

(not charged in error?) to Lincs. with "BARDSEY BIRD/FIELD OBSERVATORY" cachet overstruck by normal P.O. c.d.s. of Aberdaron. Rare trio; few known of each. (3 covers). PHOTO - plate no 7T £100
ANGLESEY
530 THE RED "Amlwch/Penny Post" USED AS A MISSENT MARK; Unusual 19th July 1841 E from London to "Alnwick" having a fair red London handstruck "1" mark and "PAID" tombstone d.s. on the front, but with a very fine orange-red "Amlwch/Penny Post" mark alongside endorsed "Mifsent to" in red, matching the m/s "Try Northumberland" also on the front. Rare usage of a Penny Post mark as a Missent marking. PHOTO - plate no 7T £120
531 RARE 1847-USAGE OF THE MALTESE CROSS ON "Llangefni/Penny Post" USAGE OF THE 1d PINK ENVELOPE; Attractive 5th Aug. 1847 usage of the 1d pink env. to Beaumaris (via "BANGOR"; v. fine c.d.s. on side-flap displays well) cancelled by a very fine black Maltese Cross (which should have been withdrawn from use in May 1844!) matching the very fine rare "Llangefni/Penny Post" alongside. Exhibition quality; it is exceptional to find a late usage of the M.C. on Postal Stationery.PHOTO £200
532 REDIRECTED CRIMEAN WAR COVER WITH 3d RATE CHANGED TO 4d RATE AT BEAUMARIS; 15th May 1855 env. addressed to Beaumaris "Via Marseilles", charged "3" with a very fine black "POST-OFFICE/B/BRITISH-ARMY" Crimean War c.d.s. nicely placed on the side-flap. In Anglesey the letter was redirected (overstruck Beaumaris c.d.s. on the reverse) to London and the initial 3d charge was not paid so there is a manuscript "4" charge (3d + the 1d for redirection). Exhibition Item. PHOTO - plate no 7B £100
533 WORLD WAR I - "R.A.F AIRSHIP STATION, LLANGEFNI" COVER AND CENSOR MARK; Rare 22nd May 1918 env. (deleted OHMS heading; minor faults) to Tamworth with KGV 1d tied by 2-ring "LLANGEFNI S.O./ANGLESEY" c.d.s. with a very fine anonymous boxed "PASSED BY CENSOR" mark alongside (presumably struck at the Airship Station), having the original contents headed from this unsual R.A.F. establishment. The letter concerns money, a telescope, delayed salary ("I have had no Navy pay for three months..."), and leave plans. Rare Airship-related item. PHOTO - plate no 7B £100
ISLE OF MAN POSTAL HISTORY
534 RARE RED "RETURNED FROM ISLE OF MAN" ENDORSEMENT; Fine 21st Oct. 1800 EL from London to Douglas (I.O.M.) charged "10" (8d maximum inland rate - "above 150 miles" - to Whitehaven plus 2d Packet rate to the island) but redirected to Dublin and so with a very fine claret-red "Returned from Isle of Man" endorsement nicely placed on the front. The final rate was "1/8" (the initial 10d plus another 2d Packet rate to Whitehaven, and a further "above 150 miles" 8d rate from Whitehaven via Holyhead) which was very high for a single-sheet letter at this date. Such P.O. endorsements are much rarer than handstruck marks at this date. Exhibition Quality.PHOTO - plate no 7B £200
535 EARLY "ISLE OF MAN" STRAIGHT-LINE MARK ON PREPAID COVER WITH EVIDENCE OF AN EARLY EXTRA 1d POST CHARGE; Fine 23rd Sept. 1825 EL from "Castletown" to Lichfield endorsed "Post Paid [1s-3d]" by the sender, but also with fine red P.O. "Paid 1/2" endorsement, having a very fine 42x3‡mm IM12 "ISLE OF MAN" mark nicely placed on the lower flap. Not only is this one of the rarer straight-line marks, but it seems clear that an extra 1d was prepaid by the sender but accounted for separately by the Douglas P.O., for the local rate from Castletown. The official I.O.M. Penny Post service did not begin until 1838. Important Exhibition Item. PHOTO - plate no 7B £200
536 VERY RARE I.O.M. PENNY POST COVER WITH THE BOXED "Ramsey/Isle of Man" MARKING; 11th July 1838 EL from "Whithorn" (on the Scottish mainland; privately carried to the island and posted from Ramsey) to "Mrs. Greaves, Post Office, Douglas", charged "1"[d] for the local Penny Post rate, having a mostly very fine boxed "Ramsey/Isle of Man" mark (IM52; slight creasing) nicely placed on the lower flap. Local Prestamp I.O.M. mail is rare. PHOTO - see plate no. £150
537 RARE DOUGLAS "MISSENT" COVER INTENDED FOR THE ISLE OF WIGHT; April 1842 EL (smuggled from "Gothenburg, Sweden" and then) posted from Ipswich (fair red "PAID/1" in circle mark on the front) addressed to "Newport Isle of Man", but endorsed "Missent" beside a very fine "DOUGLAS/ISLE-OF-MAN" c.d.s. on the front, and with "Isle of Man" crossed out and replaced by "Isle of Wight". Very few early Isle of Man Missent covers are known. Exhibition Item. PHOTO - plate no 7B £150
538 CALF OF MAN - VERY RARE LOCAL 1d RED COVER FROM DOUGLAS; 15th May 1874 env. (flap lost and minor wear) franked by a 1d Red (pl.142?) tied by a very fine "DOUGLAS·ISLE·OF·MAN/407" duplex; most unusually addressed to "Mr. Walter Mathewson, Light House, Calf of Man, Port St. Mary, Isle of Man". An exceptionally early item associated with this tiny island, and believed to be the earliest of only three such pre-1900 covers recorded. Probably the earliest recorded cover connected with the Calf of Man. [A similar 26th May 1874 cover sold for £600 in a recent - Sept. 2001 - IOM PHS auction.] PHOTO £500
539 VERY RARE RED WAX "CASTLETOWN/[Crown]" BAGSEAL ON "FOUND OPEN" 1d RED COVER; Remarkable 28th June 1878 env. to Edinburgh franked by a 1d Red (pl.198?) tied by a very fine scarce tall "CASTLETOWN/B/ISLE-OF-MAN/037" duplex, but with an initialled endorsement "Found Open" on the back flap beside a very fine (virtually 100% complete) red wax P.O. Bagseal - "CASTLETOWN/[Crown]" - with a very fine "EDINR & CARSTARS SORTING TENDER" c.d.s. nearby. Very rare; the only usage of any kind of pre-1900 P.O. Bagseal from I.O.M. that we have recorded. PHOTO - plate no 7B £240
