| DERBYSHIRE | |||||||||||||||||||||||
ONE OF THE EARLIEST RECORDED LETTERS FROM DERBYSHIRE STILL IN PRIVATE HANDS; Fine 6th June 1612 EL from "Derby" clearly addressed; "To his verie Lovinge freind Mr. John Pershowse at his howse neare Walsall, [these words be] d[elivere]d." The brief letter is cleverly folded to show the internal date and text from "Derby" alongside the address panel. It reads "Sir, The Statute wch I doe send yow hereinclosed was satisfyed yesterdaie and delivered unto me cancelled as by the same may appeare. So wth my Comendacons, [I] doe comytt yow to god's p[ro]teccon, Derby vi Junii 1612, Yor verie lovinge frend Ric. Alport." We are only aware of one earlier letter from the county in private hands, which is dated 1611. Very rare. PHOTO - see plate no. | £240 | ||||||||||||||||||||
VERY EARLY LETTER FROM THE (NOW DEMOLISHED) MANSION OWLCOTES, NR. CHESTERFIELD; 20th Apr. 1651 EL (minor toning; red wax seal) from "John Scrimshire" who says that he had "come on purpose yesternight to Oldcotes" [= Owlcotes, Sutton Scarsdale] and talks a great deal about the "Peirrepont" family and its affairs [the Pierreponts had this mansion in the 1600s]; addressed "To my much respected freind Mr. George Taylor att Chesterfield, this [be delivered]." and sent by a private messenger ("...I have sent you by this bearer..."). This sizeable house (of which a drawing survives) was demolished in the 1730s, which explains why items of PH associated with it are seldom seen. Very early local Derbyshire letter. PHOTO - see plate no. | £200 | ||||||||||||||||||||
EARLY LETTER FROM DOVERIDGE TO CHESTERFIELD; 31st Mar. 1653 EL (some toning and some folds reinforced with archival tape) from "Tho. Milwarde" at "Eaton" (i.e. the mansion "Eaton Dovedale Hall", near Doveridge, that was in the Millward family from 1576 until after the writer of this letter died c.1675), addressed "To my very good Cosen Mr. George Taylor at his house in Chesterfield [this letter be] d[elivere]d." The letter gives a legal opinion about a dispute over common pasturage rights, because Millward was a judge at this date. This little-known house, of which a drawing survives, fell into decay by 1789 and was demolished during the 19th century. Rare Cromwellian letter sent within the county. | 475 | RARE EARLY P.O. EXPRESS LETTER INVOICE FOR A LETTER SENT FROM LONDON TO HEREFORD, CHARGED "£5-9-6" (9‡d PER MILE); Fine partly printed "General Post Office" form (19.5x25 cms., dated "1807"; endorsed "Charge of Express to Hereford £5-9-6") and signed "for Mr. Freeling" by one "A. Jeffcott". This rate was 146 times the normal postal rate and equates to about 9‡d per mile! Very few Express Letters were sent via the P.O. at any date, and this is one of only a handful of such receipts recorded prior to 1840. Exhibition Item that easily fits an album-page. PHOTO - see plate no. | £300 | ||||||||||||||||||||
RARE PRINTED OFFICIAL 1826 P.O. NOTICE REF. A minimum 7m.p.h. speed is specified, the P.O. got 2s-6d from both sender and addressee, the other charges were 11d per mile (i.e. 2d for the rider, 7‡d for the horse & 1‡d for Post Horse Duty), there were special rules for O.H.M.S. Expresses, and so on. At the foot of the second side, there is a printed illustration of how O.H.M.S. Express letters were to be headed and endorsed. Prestamp P.O. Notices are rare; this is the only example of this Notice that we can recall having seen. | £150 | ||||||||||||||||||||

THE EARLIEST RECORDED LETTER FROM THE ISLE OF WIGHT; 31st Oct. 1674 EL (minor internal wear) to London headed from "Cowes on the Ile of Whit [sic]", addressed to "Morfelds nare the Popi's Head, London", charged "3" (above 80 miles journey), having a very fine "NO/2" London arrival Bishop Mark, with REVERSED "N" VARIETY, nicely placed on the side-flap. Very few 17th century letters have been recorded from the Isle of Wight, and this is the earliest that we have recorded. Important Exhibition Item. | 478 | SOLDIER's 1d CONCESSION RATE LETTER SENT FROM PARKHURST HOSPITAL TO SCOTLAND; 18th Dec. 1804 EL (some toning) from "Hospital at Parkhurst, Isle of Wight" to "Ecclefechan by Carlisle" from the "Clerk for the Hospital", Sergt. John Smith; endorsed "Pd1" with a very faint "NEWPORT I.W./105" boxed mileage mark on the front. Not headed but simply countersigned for him as "A Soldier's letter" by a Captain of the 3rd Battalion in the 60th Regiment. Interesting contents incl.; "...it be the Drum Major's fault who is very careless about looking for Letters at the Post Office..." Rare early I.O.W. Concession Rate cover. | 479 | LONDON's "POSTAGE TO LONDON NOT PAID" UDC MARK ON COVER REDIRECTED VIA ISLE OF WIGHT TO FRANCE; Much travelled June 1833 EL from Chester to London redirected to "Newport, Isle of Wight" with a very fine strike of London's UDC charge-mark (crease); redirected again from I.O.W. to Caen in France when the intial "1/8" rate (11d to London + 9d on to I.O.W.) was paid and the extra "1/2" rate to France was prepaid. Other marks include a partial "ANGLETERRE/PAR CALAIS". Rare thus. PHOTO - plate no 6T | £100 | ||||||||||||||||||||
RARE "SIIIP LETTER/YARMOUTH/Isle of Wight" MARK STRUCK IN ERROR & REPLACED BY "INDIA LETTER/LYMINGTON" ON 4d-POST PERIOD COVER EX SOUTH ATLANTIC; Remarkable 13th Dec. 1839 (arrival date in London) EL from the ship "Branken Moor" en route to Australia at "Lat. 8º N., Long. 23º W" (south of the Cape Verde Islands opposite Sierra Leone) sent to London with a very fine strike of the rare 3-line "SHIP LETTER/YARMOUTH/Isle of Wight" mark (with "SIIIP" error for "SHIP"; see enclosed p.copy of 1826 P.O. Proof-book entry) on the top flap, overstruck by a fine red boxed "INDIA LETTER/LYMINGTON" with a second strike of the latter alongside (both across the join). The letter (dated 25th Oct. 1839) mentions that "An opportunity just now occurs to forward you a line by a vessel approaching us....[we are] two months from England....[we are bound for] Hobart....[via] South Australia". There is also a fine "LYMINGTON" c.d.s. of 12th Dec. 1839 on the lower flap in a black ink apparently identical to the Yarmouth mark. It seems clear that the letter was landed at Yarmouth (IOW) but that the 3-line mark was struck in Lymington, and so when the letter reached London and the rating-error was noticed (the letter had been landed by an East Indiaman and so qualifed for the lower 8d rate), the red Lymington marks (part of the set kept in London's P.O. for such eventualities; see Tabeart) were applied, and the initial "1/-" charge was reduced to "8[d]". Exceptionally Rare Combination of marks and an amazing 4d-Post Period Exhibition Item. [Ex Rev. W. Pain, April 1970 auction.] PHOTO | £750 | ||||||||||||||||||||
