1516 AIR FRANCE - CRASH MAIL: 1935 "POR AVION" envelope addressed to a firm in Dundee, despatched from Conception on 30th October carried on board a LATE 28, Reg. F AJPB which crashed to the north of Bahia. The mailbags were subsequently recovered on a beach near Aracaju about 300 kilometres north of Bahia. A typed note reads "It is regretted that this packet was damaged by sea water following disaster to the aeroplane in which it was being transported". Scarce. PHOTO - £75

1519 C.G.A. - RARE 1930 GUILLAUMET CRASH COVER: 1930 registered cover from Valparaiso to London via Santiago & Buenos Aires carried by a Potez 25 of the C.G.A. flown by the famous French aviator, Henri Guillaumet. En route from Santiago to Mendoza & Buenos Aires, Guillaumet encountered a fierce snowstorm & heavy turbulence whilst crossing the Andes at a height of over 11,000 feet. He managed to land with difficulty and after a long and arduous trek of two days & nights he was found (badly frostbitten) & sheltered by two peasants. The mail was not found for several months but was eventually recovered and is said to have reached Paris on 23 December 1930. This letter was then forwarded to London and re-registered on arrival with P.O. labels used to reseal the envelope and an erroneous "DAMAGED BY SEA WATER" applied (on reverse). Extremely rare and one of the blue riband items of Chilean aero-philately.PHOTO - £300
1520 C.G.A. - 1932 L28 CRASH COVER: Env. franked by four different adhesives (two obviously reaffixed and another lost at sea) from Valparaiso to Paris carried on the aeroplane piloted by Hamm & Barbier which left Buenos Aires for Rio de Janeriro on 28 February and went down with all hands off Setiba (Brazil). Some sacks of mail were later recovered from the sea and the back of the cover is endorsed "Avion/accident" in m/s on arrival in Paris on 10 March. Scarce. £75

1528 PANAGRA - CRASH MAIL: 1938 cover bearing 1p Airmail strip of three & 40c "Correo Aereo" opt. carried on the ill-fated Panagra P.30 which crashed at Los Erizos Heights (near Santiago) on 19th June. The mail was finally recovered by a Pan American Grace Lines Expedition early in February 1941 and this cover shows two strikes of the purple framed five-line cachet subsequently applied in Santiago. This particular cover, addressed to Mollendo, Peru, was returned to the sender and has a good strike of the s/l "AL REMITENTE" cachet. £75

1534 ZEPPELINS: 1932 window envelope sent from Temuco via Santiago for conveyance by Zeppelin (second return flight) from the base at Pernambuco (Brazil) with 5p50 worth of adhesives (thus presumably missing a 2p & a 20c) endorsed "GRAF ZEPPELIN" in m/s and with a good strike of the "Via Graf Zeppelin/Santiago(Chile)-Friedrichshafen" cachet (depicting a Condor) in red. The letter was carried on the LMS Schooner "John Williams" & took 178 days. Fine. £150
** 1540 RAROTONGA - LOCAL LETTER BEARING THE UNIQUE FRANK OF CHIEF TINOMANA ARIKA OF ARORANGI: 1887 (12 Dec.) EL written in native language to the British vice-consul at Aviatu, Avarua, bearing the unique official label with circular "Crown/TINOMANA ARIKA/Au Maru/RAROTONGA" h.s. (AF3). ** 1545 1892 SEVEN STARS PROVISIONAL 1d BLACK IMPERFORATE BETWEEN VERTICAL PAIR [II/IV]: Upper stamp with a small stain & tiny ink line at top, almost full original gum (some natural skips and a little overall toning on reverse. Close examination reveals four "blind" perforation holes on the right side between the adhesives, the lower stamp appears to be lightly creased, however again on close examination this appears to be caused by perforation indentations running from the "O" of "POSTAGE" to the right side. In our opinion this would indicate that a second sheet with the imperforate variety probably existed. We can find no literature describing this apparent different state of the variety. A fine strike of the seven star "GOVERNMENT OF THE COOK ISLANDS" is struck nearby with two further strikes on reverse.
