1388 INTERNAL "MONEY-LETTER" COVERS WITH MARKS OF CARILLON (WITH "FREE") & AYLMER; Attractive 1842 EL from "Carillon" to "By Town" endorsed and signed as Free and "Money [Letter]", having a very fine matching red "FREE" and "MONEY-LETTER" marks nicely placed on the front; plus an 1855 EL "Paid 1/9" from Aylmer to London with a fine blue double-arc "AYLMER/U.C." 1391 MISCELLANY OF EARLY INCOMING LETTERS incl. c.1764 (date in pencil) & 1768 E (closed tears and some wear but with contemporary filing note "Brantwood den 22 Febr. 1768" on flap) to 'Capo de Goede Hoop', latter with note that it was sent by the ship 'Huyster Mye'; presumably both from Holland and, if so, rare thus. Also c.1820 scarce pair of Es both with very fine "POST OFFICE/(crown)/CAPE TOWN" marks plus "SIMONS-TOWN" (v. fine) & "UITENHAGEN" (almost so) used as arrival marks, c.1828/30 pair of Es with mostly fine strikes of crowned 2nd type "FREE" d.s. and one also (oddly) with boxed "POST PAID", two O.H.M.S. prepaid covers and 1835 printed O.H.M.S. 1393 MISCELLANY comprising 1853 1d brown-red on slightly blued paper (SG.3a) pair with good to wide margins but "smudgy" cancellation and some creasing, 1855-63 1d rose (SG.5a) used in two shades with close to wide margins, 1d deep rose-red (SG.5b) with part numeral cancellation, four good used examples of 1855 4d deep blue on white paper plus a single tied to small piece with large part red oval "POST RETIEF" d.s. leaving head of "Hope" clear with two wide margins but touched at lower right & a little creased and 1855-63 4d blue in two used blocks of 4 with added margins & a pair with repaired tear plus two good used shades. (slight stains but with original enclosure) from the officer in charge of "Kraay-fontein Convict Station" (near Paarl) posted on 5th October from Cape Town to Glasgow and endorsed (mainly beneath adhesives) to travel by named steamer and franked with a fine pair of 4d blue stamps on deeply blued paper (SG.2) with fine to wide margins all round just tied by "C/GH" barred triangle and charged a further "8" (d) ship letter rate on arrival. (vertical creease clear of adhesive & some edge wear) from Grahams Town (nearly fine red oval d.s. on reverse) to Colchester endorsed "Per Mail Steamer" at top and signed "Ch. Buchanan, Clerk(?) St.(?) Off. G(?) M.S." at lower left of address franked only with a single 1d brick-red on cream paper (SG.5 - wide margins all round but rubbed in margin at left and point of corner shaved at foot) tied by a light "C/GH" barred triangle with v.fine blue "PLYMOUTH/PACKET LETTER" c.d.s. on back & a red "LONDON/PAID" c.d.s. on the front.
