1271 SPECTACULAR GOLD-RUSH PERIOD PRINTED PICTORIAL LETTER-SHEET TO G.B. WITH UNIQUE (?) DUBLIN "AUSTRALIAN MAIL/PAID" ARRIVAL MARK; Extraordinary 10th-13th Oct. 1856 EL (overall wear; the stamps appears to have been replaced) from "Tarrangower" to Scotland "Per firs[t] Mail" franked by a Victoria 6d orange (does not belong?) cancelled by the Melbourne "1" numeral, having a fine oval Melbourne d.s. on the flap, with a red "1d" Accountancy Mark and a superb unrecorded (?) "AUSTRALIAN MAIL/PAID" transit c.d.s. (6th Jan. 1857) of Dublin nicely placed on the front. This spectacular marking - the only example recorded by us - appears to be entirely unrecorded; neither Robertson nor Tabeart mention it. It is recorded that the ship which carried this letter - the "Montmorency" - made its first land-fall at Dunmore East in Ireland, and the single mailbag that it carried was sent on from there to Dublin for sorting. In addition to the Postal History importance of this item, the contents are just as significant; they are headed by a a large printed vignette of "The City Terminus of the M. & H. B. Railway Compy., 1854" by the artist "S.T.G." (printed by "CAMPBELL & FERGUSON LTD." and published by "JAMES BLUNDELL & Co."). The picture shows a steam engine pulling two coaches along the harbour side with porters and on-lookers in the foreground and a back-drop of a forest of sailing ships' masts. The writer (semi-literate) gives news of high prices for food (he is earning £3 per week with board/lodging); he works on a quartz-crushing machine. His master makes £100-150 profit a week, charging £4 per ton for crushing 50 tons a week. Gold is selling for £3-17s-0d per ounce. He gives his address as "Care of Mr. Blyth, Market Square, Castelmain By Melbourne". Most attractive; a Rare and Important Gold-Rush Item and a Major Irish Postal History Rarity. PHOTO - see plate no. £750
