1182 THE WAR OF AUSTRIAN SUCCESSION - THE RARE "AB" IN CIRCLE MARK OF THE "ARMÉE BRITANNIQUE" ON GOOD CAMPAIGN LETTER; 14th Oct. 1743 EL (closed tear through address but clear of postal marks - "magic" sellotape inside needs to be removed) to London "From the Camp at Beberick opposite Mentz" with a very fine "AB" in circle on the front - this mark was only used in 1743-5 on British forces mail from this Campaign - and a very fine London Foreign Branch "OC/24" Bishop Mark on the flap. The letter was charged "8" and then "1/-" postage. The contents (beautifully written) "...[we moved from] the Camp at Speir the 30th of [Sept.]...& came to Worms the 2d inst. the King [George II himself, who had led the Army personaly in hand-to-hand fighting at the Battle of Dettingen on 27th June 1743] left the Army [on] the 5th [Oct.], & on the 6th we marched to our old Camp at Mentz. On the 9th [Oct.] the Dutch passed the Rhine over our old bridge & [on] the 10th [Oct.] the English & since the other Allies [have done the same]...this morning the 2d brigade [of Dragoons] marched for [Ghent]...Bruxellles...is to be the winter Quarters of us...The sick, of which there is great numbers, are left in Hospitals ...I thank God I still preserve my health, though we now live in Water, the rains being began...if my letter is not so long as usual, it is owing to the cold, which makes it very uncomfortable to sett to write. Pray direct to me 'at Bruxelles ou alliers'....None but the sick & some Members of Parliament have leave of absence till the Army hath got into Quarters...after having seen & suffered much [I] shall be better inured for future Campaignes." 1188 THE 1st AFGHAN WAR - CAMPAIGN LETTER FROM BRITISH FORCE APPROACHING THE BORDER, WITH NEWS OF GENERAL POLLOCK's FORCING OF THE KHYBER PASS; 23rd/25th April 1842 EL (ink marks affect address panel but clear of address and handstruck marks, but with full typed transcript) from "Camp Mihessei" and "Dadur", addressed to "Jaulnah" (redirected to Mahableshwur) with boxed "Bearing" marks of "[M?]UCKEER", "JAULNAH" and "BOMBAY". The contents are written by a British soldier (to his soldier brother) en route northwards to Quetta (near the southern Afghan border) giving the latest news from the War; "Today we hear that General Pollock has got through the [Khyber] Pass, having fought & thrashed the enemy well; he is now on his way to Caubul. I fear all the fun will be over before we arrive." Rare item from this final stage of the infamous First Afghan War. PHOTO - £200
1189 COLOURED HAND-DRAWN PICTURE OF A BRITISH UNIFORM IN A LETTER TO SWITZERLAND; Unusual 18th June 1849 EL (minor wear & dusty address panel) from "Bishopsthorpe" sub-office of York (fine blue UDC on front) to a soldier studying French in Lausanne, endorsed "via Paris" and prepaid 11d in cash. The contents concern the addressee's enquiry about the design of dress uniform for his new regiment, and is headed by an attractive watercolour of a soldier. The writer (the addressee's father) writes; "In your last letter you said you wished we would tell you what facings the 39th [Regiment] have, so we have endeavoured to draw a soldier of that Regt. for you...your Regt. are at Preston..." 1190 CRIMEAN WAR - MALTA COVER ADDRESSED TO FLORENCE NIGHTINGALE AT SCUTARI HOSPITAL; 5th Dec. 1854 unpaid EL (written in Italian; apparently written - by "Elena Nierra" - on behalf of her son Paolo who had just departed with an English family for Egypt) sent from "Malta" addressed to "Mifs F. Nightingale, Barracks Hospital, Scutari, Constantinople", with a fine large double-arc "MALTA" c.d.s. on the top flap slightly overlapped by a fine French P.O. 2-ring "CONSTANTINOPLE/TURQUIE" arrival c.d.s.; charged "5" in manuscript. There is a brief filing endorsement (perhaps in Florence's own hand??) inside; "General. Answered Dec. 19". Last I heard there were something like 9,000-10,000 troops here altogether. Although they have only admitted to a couple of deaths on their side during the 2 hour battle. I believe there were quite alot more..........At the moment we are all sitting patiently waiting for the British Task Force to arrive. 1221 ARGENTINE FORCES MAIL: Three aerogrammes to Buenos Aires dated 28 April, 12 May & 30 May respectively, the former being an 11 peso type sent from a 20 year old conscript to his girlfriend, the second beaing an 18 peso type from another 20 year old soldier to his family (both these with "9409 ISLAS MALVINAS" datestamps and the third being a 13 peso type with no cancellation from a young conscript at "Puerto Argentino". A scarce trio. £100
1222 ARGENTINE FORCES - INCOMING MAIL: 21 April cover and contents from the mother of a Sub-Lieutenant addressed to Comodoro Rivadavia and thence forwarded to the Falklands with rare blue "EJERCITO ARGENTINO/GUARNICIONMILITAR MALVINAS" and a 10 May cover from Buenos Aires bearing four different Argentine adhesives to a young conscript in the 2nd Infantry Battaliion opened and resealed with tape. This item probably followed him to the Falklands where it was found (retouched "CENSURA NAVAL ARGENTINA" cachet on reverse. A rare pair. £180

1232 BOLIVIA - LLOYD AEREO BOLIVIANO: 1925 (2 Oct.) long envelope addressed to Santa Cruz bearing 15c Airmail adhesive tied by large violet oval "CORREO AEREO/2 OCT 1925/COCHABAMBA-SANTA CRUZ" d.s. and with a similar "OCT 2 1925 SANTA CRUZ-COCHABAMBA" cachet on reverse. Scarce so early - Field (1934) cites this as the first date of the service, whilst other sources opine that it was initiated as early as September 12th or as late(!) as December 25th. Also a 1935 First Flight cover per Panagra from Santiago to La Paz (military censor cachet on reverse) with a multi-colour Bolivian/Chilean franking partially overstruck with a five-line "EL CHACO BOREAL IS AND WILL ALWAYS BE BOLIVIAN" cachet in five different languages. Note: At the time of this flight the "Gran Chaco" war (June 1932 to June 1935) between Bolivia & Paraguay was taking place. An unusual pair. PHOTO - see plate no. £75
1233 BRITISH SOUTH AMERICAN AIRWAYS: The selection of covers flown via B.S.A.A. including 1946 (26 Jan.) cover ex London to Buenos Aires bearing 3d (2) & 1/- (2) with type-written "British South American Airways/FIRST MAIL CARRYING/PREPARATORY FLIGHT" (eventually returned to sender as the addressee did not collect the letter), 1946 cover ex Buenos Aires to London presumably carried on the second proving flight (per "Starlight"), 1946 (March) FFC of the B.S.A.A.regular service to Buenos Aires via Lisbon, Bathurst, Natal & Montevideo, 1950 covers (2) to Essex endorsed "Via BSAA/EXPRESSO" (although by this date B.S.A.A. had merged with B.O.A.C.) and four 1947-49 covers with stick-on "Via B.S.A.A." labels. A good lot. (14 covers plus a 1948 Timetable of B.S.A.A. flights). £150
1234 BRITISH SOUTH AMERICAN AIRWAYS - 1946 PROVING FLIGHT COVER: 1946 stampless cover addressed to "J.Sharpe, Poste Restante London" subsequently forwarded to Glasgow endorsed "By Air Mail/Carried by Air/Special/Trade Mission/Gt.Britain to S.America/Feb. 11th 1946/" and bearing a signature which would appear to be Pierson Zoling (pilot?). Additionally endorsed "BRITISH SOUTH AMERICAN AIRWAYS" & "Buenos Aires" (which has been crossed through and replaced with "Rio de Janeiro"). Postal markings/cachets comprise red circular "A.P.T. AVENIDA/D.R. D.F.", red "BRASIL/Cts*540/CORREIO/1296" and a pictorial "VIA AEREA" cachet (again in red & depicting a Flying Boat). Pencil annotations on the reverse of the cover opine that it was carried on the plane "Starland" and was "probably carried on board one of the BSAA proving flights". Most unusual. PHOTO - £75

1236 LATIN AMERICA - THE 1928 DOOLITTLE FLIGHTS: Small collection of covers, etc. relating to the "Doolittle Flights" of 1928 inc. nine covers bearing adhesives of Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Paraguay & Peru and with relevant "FIRST EXPERIMENTAL FLIGHT" cachets for Lima-La Paz (2, one pilot signed), La Paz-Santiago, Santiago-Buenos Aires (2), Buenos Aires-Montevideo, Montevideo-Rio de Janeiro (2) & one with m/s "ASUNCION" obliterating "Montevideo" (again signed by Doolittle. Note: James Doolittle was born in 1896, flew in the First World War, won the Schneider Trophy in 1925 and later became Commanding General of the U.S. 8th Air Force which wreaked havoc in Germany.
