851 COLCHESTER - VERY EARLY "TWIN" LETTER TO IRELAND; 10th Oct. 1682 EL headed from "Colchester" having two long separate letters written by different people on the one large sheet (to avoid postage; this system of sending a "twin" letter written by more than one person was common practice, but is seldom found so early). The letter is addressed "To Thomas Atherton at the Blew Boot in Patrick Street in Dublin in Ireland; for Benjamin Bangs, Dublin" and endorsed "Ben. Bangs Letters" on the flap; presumably Atherton was a shop-keeper who took delivery of letters for others. There is s mostly very fine London "OC/17" Bishop Mark on the flap and the distinctive manuscript "6" charge (London to Dublin rate) on the front. The letters appear to be from Quaker friends of Mr. Bangs; Solomon Formantell and Stephen Crisp. The former mentioned that; "...it be here with us a very sickly time, & many freindes are visited with the smal pocks..." Rare thus; ingoing mail to Ireland is even rarer than outgoing mail prior to 1700 . PHOTO -PLATE 16A £150
