505 CUNARD LINE - SIGNED LETTER WRITTEN BY SAMUEL CUNARD - FOUNDER OF THE BRITISH AND NORTH AMERICAN R.M.S. PACKET COMPANY: 1839 (3 April) EL from London to Boston (Mass.) "pr South America" (Black Ball Line) with fine strikes on front of the "PAID SHIP LETTER/LONDON" d.s. (Rob. S51), circular London 2G.P./PAID" & "PAID" d.s. plus "NEW YORK/SHIP" d.s. all in red. Addressed to Israel Whitney of the Cochico manufacturing Co. and signed by Cunard. The 4pp folded sheet has one side with a printed testimonial reporting the quality of Canadian coals, from John N. Nott, the Commander of HM Steam Vessel "Medea" on station at Halifax, Nova Scotia. The Cunard letter exhorts Whitney to purchase the Canadian coals and he states that "the Board have authorised me to allow a large discount on Sydney Coal, provided you take three thousand chaldrons (a chaldron was equivalent to 36 bushels) or upwards during the present year - the price will remain at three dollars sixty cents per chaldron at the mines ....but you will be allowed fifty cents per chaldron discount at the end of the year provided you have taken three thousand chaldrons...The coal from these mines is equal to the best English coal for domestic purposes". Cunard was in England to press for the Mail contract and finally signed the agreement the day prior to the arrival of this letter in New York. Also included are various articles about Cunard. 546 JAPAN - A REMARKABLE USA - GB - JAPAN COMBINATION COVER: 1875 (31 Dec) USA 3c green env. uprated with 2c brown cancelled with "cork" cancellations sent by Governor later president Hayes of Fremont, Ohio to John A Bingham, United States Minister at Tokyo Japan, with GB 3d rose plate 18 DG & 1/- green plate 12 GB added in transit cancelled with Charring Cross duplex, on arrival at Tokyo a Japan 4s green (not tied) was added to pay postage due. Various despatch and transit marks inc "INSUFFICIENTLY/PREPAID", oval red "UNITED STATES/B.E.STEVENS/LONDON/DESPATCH ROOMS" d.s. and on the reverse a poor but readable "HONG KONG/SINGAPORE/HONG KONG/MARINE-SORTER" c.d.s. A copy of the original contents is included. The top top flap is partly torn away and other faults are evident. RPSL Cert (2002) which states that they are unable to certify the Japan 4s adhesive as belonging. This cover was part of an original find made by the Robson Lowe USA agent in the 1970's, several covers from the correspondence do exist. A copy of an 1880 cover with a 4s adhesive is included. We have no doubts that this item is genuine but can understand from the evidence available to them why the RPSL: could not give a fuller opinion. PHOTO - £400
