LAST DAY OF MILEAGE-BASED RATES - LETTER SENT FROM DERBY BUT POSTED FROM LONDON; 3rd/4thg Dec. 1839 EL headed from "Derby" on 3rd Dec. 1839 and addressed to Loughborough, but actually posted from London the next day, 4th Dec. 1839, the Last Day of Mileage-Based Postage Rates. There is a mostly very fine London "EX" c.d.s. for 4th Dec. 1839 (the "4" digits just recognisable) on the flap, and the letter has been charged "9"[d]. If posted the next day the charge would only have been 4d! Rare thus; understandably, very few letters were posted on this day.
