| 855 | VERY RARE PART UNUSED SHEET OF DISTRICT LABELS; Two Blocks of 20 blue garter-design District labels (four each of SW, NW, EC, N, SE, WC, S, W, NE & E) cut from the only recorded complete sheet of 100 labels that was divided up by Martin Willcocks some years ago. With a photocop of ythe sheet from which these two blocks were subsequently cut. These labels were produced in these sheets showing all the district initials by various independent stationery retailers in 1857, but they were little used (SEVERAL OF THESE HAVE NEVER BEEN RECORDED ON COVERS) and the hand-written initials became the norm for most letters, just as we use Postcodes today.
