THE IAN POTTER COLLECTION OF JAMAICAN STAMPS AND POSTAL HISTORY.
The following 162 lots comprise the extensive collection of the stamps and postal history of Jamaica formed by Ian over many years. Cavendish have had the honour of auctioning two other substantial holdings of Jamaica in recent times (the exceptional "Swarbrick Collection" in September 1995 and the "Mike Vokins Collection" in September 1999) with Ian's treasures representing the third major tranche of Jamaican stamps and postal history offered through our Auctions during the last decade. Ian's particular interest in Jamaican philately focused on the cancellations of the various Island Post Offices leading to him editing the excellent book "The Postal Markings of Jamaica" which has been invaluable to our describing team in their lotting and evaluation of this fascinating collection - the strength of which undoubtedly lies in postal history with a heavy emphasis on pre-stamp mail. Several of Ian's covers emanated from the Cavendish "Swarbrick" and "Vokins" Sales and wherever possible we have indicated this in our descriptions. The other section of this outstanding collection which should be of particular interest to all aficionados of Jamaican postal history is Ian's extensive study of Obliterator cancellations on off-cover adhesives. These lots represent the best such study we have encountered and will provide would be purchasers with a rare opportunity to add some extremely elusive cancellations to their collections. Ian Kellock, February 2003.
