THE IAN POTTER COLLECTION OF JAMAICAN OBLITERATOR CANCELLATIONS.
The following 26 lots comprise the remarkable collection of obliterator cancellations of Jamaica formed by Ian over a great many years. These cancellations were originally issued in 1858 for use on Great Britain stamps in Jamaica with "A01" being issued to the Kingston Post Office. A year later the obliterators "A27" to "A78" were issued to the other offices then open on an alphabetical basis. At various times these were recalled and issued to other offices. When new offices were opened or extra cancels required, the numbers "A79" to "A83" were added. Later on a further group of numeral obliterators with "E", "F" and "G" prefixes were introduced, followed by the "High number" 193 to 647 numeral only obliterators and the "A", "B", "C", "D" and "E" letter-only obliterators. Ian's exceptional collection of these marks are lotted accordingly, predominantly in numerical groups, commencing with his collection of Kingston obliterators, continuing with his splendid study of the "A" numbers and concluding with the scarce "B", "C" and "E" letter-only obliterators. The final lot in this section is Ian's very own working copy of the indispensable tour-de-force on the island's postmarks - "The Postal Markings of Jamaica" which is a veritable mine of information..
