"(Crown)/E" & THE "(Crown)/GviR" CYPHER CACHETS ISSUED IN 1949 FOR PRINCESS ELIZABETH's MAIL FROM CLARENCE HOUSE; Large part official ledger-page (from the same Official Mail cachets' Proof-book broken up some 20 years ago by J.G.-T. when it first came onto the market - see "GRI/VI" Proof lot above) headed "CLARENCE HOUSE, S.W.1" with two Proof-Strikes of Royal Cypher cachets in purple on small attached pieces. The Proofs are the only recorded example of the large "(Crown)/E" Cypher - of which no other usages have yet been found - and the normal 3rd-Type 2-ring "(Crown)/GviR" Cypher mark. Both are annotated as having been issued for the official mail of "H.R.H.THE PRINCESS ELIZABETH"; the latter is noted as having been issued on 25th July 1949, only 3 months after the "E" Cypher. The "GviR" mark is annotated thus:- "The certifying stamp "E" surmounted by a coronet, previously notified as the authorised certificate stamp to be used by H.R.H. Princess Elizabeth at her residence at Clarence House, S.W.1, has been withdrawn from use and replaced by the stamp "G.R. vi". Remarkable and important historical record of Queen Elizabeth's personal mail cachets issued when she was Princess. Only two other examples of this Handstruck "4" marking - one of the rarest of all British Postmarks - have been recorded; one is in the British Library (Fletcher Collection) and the other was until recently in the W.B. Gledhill Collection. This is the earliest date of the three (the Fletcher Collection cover is dated 30th Dec. 1839 and the Gledhill cover is dated 8th Jan. 1840).
