1400 LAST DAY OF MILEAGE-BASED RATES COVER + 4d-POST & EARLY 1d-POST COVERS; Rare 4th Dec. 1839 E (minor seal-hole tears) from London to Leeds with a mostly fine London "DE-4/1839" c.d.s. nicely placed on the top flap, charged "1/10"; if posted the next day the charge for this two-sheet letter would only have been 4d!! Plus 20th Dec. 1839 - 1st Jan. 1840 trio of EL's with manuscript prepaid "P4" (Merthyr Tydvill; rare from Wales), prepaid "Pd 4" (Sunderland) and unpaid "4" (Southampton), as well as part 17th Dec. 1839 E with black unpaid m/s "4", and a fine 12th Jan. 1840 (3rd Day of 1d Postage) EL from "CLARE" (Suff.) with v. fine c.d.s. and red m/s "1". Good lot; 4th Dec. 1839 covers are particularly scarce. £150
1401 THE FANCY EMBOSSED "FREE" STAMP-FRAME COVERS - 2 DIFFERENT TYPES (EX IRELAND & WORCS.); 1850/1 pair of fine envelopes franked by 1d Reds (margins in places; cut to fit the embossed frames) tied by fair numerals; from "STOURBRIDGE" and "BORRISAKANE" respectively. The stamps are placed in fancy embossed frames at the top right of the addresses, surmounted by crowns with the word "FREE" beneath each. These envelopes celebrated the fact that a mere 1d now rendered anyone's letters Free from further postage charges. EL from Derry to Philadelphia franked with a marginal marginal 1/- green embossed, just shaved to huge margins, tied by a very fine "172" Irish numeral and part strike of the circular framed "12" in blue. ** 1461 SIXPENNY REGISTRATION RATE TO GERMANY, 1855: Attractive, small E addressed to Hanover & franked with a 4-margin, cut-square example of the 6d lilac, cancelled (not tied) by the '405' numeral of Ipswich with fine green c.d.s. nearby; red '(crown)/REGISTERED' & boxed 'RECOMMANDIRT' h.s., Aachen transit etc. A colourful item.
