** 1271 RAROTONGA - EARLIEST USE OF NZ ADHESIVES ON REGULAR MAIL FROM RAROTONGA - THE EARLIEST RECORDED EXAMPLE OF THE COOK ISLANDS FEDERATION HANDSTAMP: 1891 (Nov.) opened out envelope from frederick Moss (British Resident) at Rarotonga to his wife at Parnell, NZ; the cover bears a pair of 2d Second Sideface issue cancelled with the "A" barred oval of Auckland which was reserved for unfranked adhesives on mail arriving on ship's letters. On the reverse is a clear strike of the large violet circular "GOVERNMENT OF THE COOK ISLANDS" seal with large central star. The cover suggests that Mr. Moss brought a quantity of New Zealand adhesives with him on his appointment as Resident and that the stamps were the first used for regular mail from the Cook Islands. The upper stamp with a small stain and tiny ink line at top, almost full original gum (some natural skips and a little overall toning on reverse. Close examination reveals four "blind" perforation holes on the right side between the adhesives, the lower pair appears to be lightly creased, however again on close examination this appears to be caused by perforation indentations running from the "O" of "POSTAGE" to the right side. In our opinion this would indicate that a second sheet with the imperforate variety probably existed. We can find no literature describing this apparent different state of the variety. WITH TYPE L1 CANCELLATION IN MAGENTA: 1901 Env. to Salt Lake City franked with a Makea 2‡d rose tied by the "COOK ISLANDS/P.O./AITUTAKI" (L1) circular cancellation in a magenta shade with a further example struck alongside. ** 1298 SELDOM USED REGISTRATION LABEL ON COVER TO ENGLAND: 1911 Env. registered to Oxford (fine Auckland transit and superb Oxford arrival marks on back) franked with blocks of four of both ‡d & 1d perf. 14 and a vertical pair of 2‡d adhesives with central "AITUTAKI"/N.Z." (L2) c.d.s.'s. The cover also bears a registration label with reddish-pink undated "AITUTAKI/N.Z." circular cancellation (L2 with date removed). Very slight foxing but still a most attractive cover. £100
COOK ISLANDS - PENRHYN
** 1299 THE EARLIEST RECORDED COVER WITH THE PENRHYN (M1) CDS: 1902 (7 May) env. to Suva carried on the mail steamer "Tavinui" via Papeete & New Zealand to Suva (Fiji), franked with Cook Islands Torea ‡d blue & Makea 5d olive in combination with Penrhyn ‡d, 1d & 2‡d, all tied by the "PENRHYN ISLAND/NEW ZEALAND" (M1) cds. Some foxing at foot of the 1d & side of the ‡d. Believed to be the earliest recorded use of the first cds. Note: A cover dated 4 May 1902 is recorded, however the adhesives are cancelled in m/s plus bagseal. Illustrated & described on p.414 of the RSPNZ handbook Vol.V. [Ex Burge]. ** 1300 1913 Cover to NSW franked with 1903 3d tied by a fine "PENRHYN ISLAND/N.Z." cds with fine "COFF'S HARBOUR/N.S.W." cds alongside. £75
** 1301 1914 (14 Feb.) Env. franked with 1d carmine tied by "PENRHYN/N-Z" (D1) cds. On reverse are 2COOK ISLANDS/RAROTONGA2 (A6) cds of 13 April 1914 with a clear example of the "MAUKE/N-Z" (D1) cds of 4 May (a total transit time of 3 months). Some cover staining and damaged but probably the earliest recorded use of this scarce cds. It is interesting to note that the earliest example of this cds in the Fitzpatrick sale was August 1921! £150

1305 1851-1979 Collection in stockbook, mainly used but a few better mint incl 1918 27o on 10o perf 12 3/4, good used earlies, imperfs then many better numeral values, inverted frames, etc. Michel identification for better items. Mainly clean cancels throughout. Some back-of-the-book material & 15 Greenland adhesives. In all a very fine lot, needs careful viewing (100's). (STC £4500). £400

** 1306 ITALIAN POST OFFICES IN EGYPT, 1866-80 - EARLY ITALY/EGYPT LETTER-RATE COMBINATION COVER TO ITALY: 11th Dec., 1866 env. (flap lost) to Brindisi franked not only with Egypt 1st issue 1pi lilac tied by fine large Cairo c.d.s. but also with an Italy 60c mauve (perfs. cut at foot) tied by dotted "234" grid numeral matching the fair "ALESSANDRIO D'EGITTO POSTE ITALIANE" c.d.s. nearby and with very fine boxed "PIROSCAFI/POSTALI/ITALIANI" alongside. ** 1307 INTERNAL RATE - 1st ISSUE FRANKING - VERY EARLY USAGE OF 20pa ON COVER: 1866 (6th Feb.) EL to Suez franked with a horizontal pair of the 20pa bluish-green tied by an almost fine Cairo c.d.s. with a second but this time very fine strike on the front and having a mostly fine Suez arrival c.d.s. on the back. Rare thus and one of the earliest recorded usages of the 20pa value. PHOTO - £300
** 1308 INTERNAL RATE - 1st ISSUE FRANKING - 2pi ORANGE-YELLOW BISECT ON CAIRO FRONT: 30th July, 1867 front (creases, one partly reinforced, but well clear of adhesive) from Cairo to Alexandria franked with a diagonally bisected 2pi orange-yellow tied by a fine blue Cairo c.d.s. Rare in any condition; this bisect to pay the 1pi rate was allowed only in Alexandria & Cairo and only for the period 16th-31st July, 1867. [Supported by B.P.A. Certificate issued in 1967]. ** 1309 AUSTRIA/EGYPT COMBINATION COVER TO TRIESTE: Attractive 27th June, 1868 E (very slight discoloration around adhesives) from Cairo to Trieste franked with Austrian Lombardy-Venetia 15s brown tied by a partly fine Austrian P.O. "ALEXANDRIEN" c.d.s. and by an Egypt 2nd issue 1pi red tied both by Austrian P.O. c.d.s. and by a very fine large "POSTE VICE-REALI EGIZIANE/+CAIRO+" c.d.s. with a 2nd July "TRIEST" arrival d.s. on the flap. Very rare combination cover sent shortly before introduction of all-in Austrian Postal Treaty rates (from 1st Oct., 1868) which made such multi-franking unnecessary. One of the rarest combination covers of Egypt and a most attractive EXHIBITION CENTREPIECE. PHOTO - £3000
** 1310 RARE "SERAPEUM" DATESTAMP ON FRANCE/EGYPT COMBINATION COVER TO CORSICA: 1869 (29 Nov.) env. (part flap removed and used to fill neatly two holes cut in the address) to Ajaccio, franked by Egypt 2nd issue 1pi red tied by a very fine large "POSTE EGIZIANE/SERAPEUM" cds and a vertical pair of France 1869 20c blues, tied by fine dotted "5080" numerals of the French P.O. in Alexandria (fair cds nearby). This Serapeum cancellation is very rare, being used at a small P.O. and only having a life of less than a year before its smaller replacement was introduced. Exhibition item. Peter Holcombe Cert. ** 1311 FRENCH POST OFFICES IN EGYPT - FRANCE/EGYPT COMBINATION COVER WITH RARE PORT SAID DATESTAMP: 8th Oct., 1869 E ex Port Said to Marseilles franked with French 40c orange adhesive tied by partial dotted "5080" numeral of French P.O. in Alexandria (mainly fine c.d.s. alongside) and also franked with an Egypt 2nd issue 1pi red tied by fine ("REGIE" removed) "POSTE EGIZIANE/ PORTO SAID" c.d.s. (very short-lived mark; used for only part of 1869) with a second and this time very fine strike below. Rare thus and very attractive. PHOTO - see plate no.11A £750
** 1312 ITALIAN POST OFFICE IN ALEXANDRIA - ITALY/EGYPT LETTER-RATE COVER TO ITALY: Small 21st Oct., 1870 env. to Milan franked with Egypt 2nd issue 1pi red tied by partly fine Cairo c.d.s. and also franked with an Italian 40c red (partly over edge and slight creasing at corner) tied by a fine dotted "234" numeral grid matching the fine "ALESSANDRIA D'EGITTO/POSTE ITALIANE" c.d.s. alongside; rare thus. ** 1313 EGYPTIAN POST OFFICES ABROAD, 1870-88 - GREECE - EGYPTIAN P.O. AT VOLOS - COMBINATION COVER WITH GREEK HERMES HEAD USED FOR POSTAGE DUE: 13th May, 1871 E addressed to Syra franked with an Egypt 2nd issue 1pi red (hinged to cover but clearly belongs) tied by a fine strike of the rare "V.R. POSTE EGIZIANE/VOLO" c.d.s. with a second fine strike alongside. There was a Greek internal rate of "20" (lepta) due from the addressee which was marked in red crayon and so there is a Greek 20l blue large Hermes head (3m) also on the front tied by a fair Syros c.d.s. Scarce combination of a rare Egyptian Consular P.O. in Greece with a large Hermes head used as postage due. Important and very visual exhibition item. PHOTO - £4000
** 1314 RARE INGOING ITALY/EGYPT COMBINATION COVER TO CAIRO: 1871 (10 Sept.) env. to Cairo franked by Italy 40c red tied by Livorno's dotted numeral grid with a very fine "LIVORNO" cds on the front; also franked by a 2nd issue Egypt 1pi red tied by a very fine "R.POSTE EGIZIANE/ALESSANDRIA" cds. ** 1315 EXTERNAL RATE - FOUR COLOUR FRANKING COVER - AUSTRIAN POSTAL TREATY RATE TO VENICE: Spectacular 9th June, 1872 E (minor closed tears well clear of stamps do not detract) to Venice attractively franked by 3rd issue (1872 typo. issue) 20pa blue, 2 x 1pi red, 2pi yellow & 2‡pi grey -blue all tied by fine to very fine "V.R. POSTE EGIZIANE/CAIRO" c.d.s.'s with pale blue "P.D.", "coi Postali Austriaci" and Cairo "Franca" instructional marks (all very fine) on the front and a partial Austrian P.O. "ALEXANDRIEN" c.d.s. across the seal beside an Egyptian Alexandria c.d.s. A very rare example of the all-in 7pi rate on a double-weight letter prepaid solely with Egyptian stamps as per the 1868 Austro-Egyptian Postal Treaty. Important and eye-catching exhibition item. ** 1316 INTERNAL RATES - 2nd ISSUE FRANKING - 10pa MAUVE BISECT USED FOR NEWSPAPER RATE: 12th Jan., 1872 large piece of front page of Italian language newspaper [part of addressee's (?) name written faintly at top] franked by a bisected 10pa mauve tied by a partly fine small "V.R. POSTE EGIZIANE/ALESSANDRIA" c.d.s. A small section around the stamp has at one time been cut out and neatly re-affixed to the rest of the piece; nonetheless very attractive and rare. [Ex Byam and 'Bonaparte'; latter Cavendish in Oct., 1998]. PHOTO - see plate no.11B £500
** 1317 VERY RARE GREECE/EGYPT COMBINATION COVER FROM SINAI TO GREECE: 1874 (8 April) env. (opening faults at top & opened out for display but with a fine red wax seal of st. Catherine's Monastery at Sinai, where there was no P.O., on the reverse) to Athens, franked by two overlapping Greek 20l blue Hermes Heads (margins in places) tied by a single fair dotted diamond cancellation (matching the Greek P.O. "ALEXANDRIA" cds alongside) and franked additionally by an Egypt 3rd issue 2pi yellow tied by a mostly fine "POSTE EGIZIANE/CAIRO" cds. Extremely rare - very few Greece/Egypt Combination covers have survived. PHOTO - see plate no.11B £3000
** 1318 EGYPTIAN POST OFFICES ABROAD - TURKEY - DOUBLE PORT-TO-PORT RATE COVER EX CONSTANTINOPLE TO ALEXANDRIA: 26th May, 1875 env. (flap faults & slight stain clear of marks and adhesives) to Alexandria franked by pair of Egypt 3rd issue 1pi red (1874 Bulaq printing) tied by fine "V.R.POSTE EGIZIANE/CONSTANTINOPOLI" c.d.s. with an 80% Alexandria arrival c.d.s. on reverse. ** 1319 EXTERNAL RATE - 3 COLOUR FRANKING 3pi 10pa NON-U.P.U. COVER TO AUSTRALIA VIA BRITISH P.O. IN SUEZ: Rare 13th Oct., 1876 env. (some staining and wear) to Melbourne franked with 3rd issue 10pa grey, 1pi red & 2pi yellow all tied by fine "POSTE EGIZIANE/CAIRO" c.d.s.'s with very fine small British P.O. "SUEZ" c.d.s. and large matching "PD" in circle mark below. (U.P.U. rates did not apply until the Australian States joined in 1891).
