COVER TO SCOTLAND VIA PANAMA: 1868 (31 March) env. ex Hinton to Dumfriesshire bearing perforated 6d Diadem, endorsed "Via Panama" in m/s and with boxed "TOO LATE" mark. Put into the post too late at Hinton, the letter reached Sydney on 2 April - the day after the "Rakaia" had left for Panama - redirection via Suez & Southampton resulted in a 3 week delay in delivery. OUTGOING MAIL TO IRELAND VIA N.Z. AND THE U.S.A.: 1870 cover to Ireland bearing perforated 1/- Diadem, endorsed "Via Honolulu & San Francisco", carried on the second voyage of a contract principally between Mr.H.H.Hall (the U.S. Consul) and the Government of New Zealand, to which N.S.W. became a party for a year. No rate was actually announced for this route until August 1868 and it is probable that the 1/- charged on this letter was the single rate for the first five voyages. PHOTO -

OUTGOING MAIL TO CANADA: 1871 cover to Canada bearing perforated 6d Diadem, ex Goulburn, N.S.W. sent via Fiji & San Francisco (courtesy of a short-lived contract between Mr.H.H.Hall, the U.S. Consul and the N.S.W.
