1902 (JAN) 1D CARMINE - THE UNIQUE BLOCK WITH GREENISH VIOLET OVERPRINT: 1902 1d carmine, a mounted mint block of four with violet overprint, part gum, vertical crease at left (most of the recorded examples have this). Believed to be the only recorded block with the greenish violet overprint. BPA Cert (1981) and RPSNZ Cert (1990). RPSNZ Vol. V page 426 states The overprinting was done by working down vertical rows. It would appear that the green ink obtained from the printer was applied to a pad which had violet ink on it. The overprint on the first vertical row and part of the second row of the first sheet showed a preponderance of the violet ink of the pad". SG Cat. £5,600+. A total of fifteen examples are recorded.
