(faults) from a member of 172nd Infantry Regiment (on board S.S. "President Coolidge" in Noumea harbour 20-24 Oct.) to Wisconsin. [The ship sank on 26 Oct. after hitting a mine whilst entering the Segond Channel; this cover is thought to be the only Army item from Noumea associated with the S.S. "President Coolidge" on this voyage]. (latter being personal property of Pl/Sgt. W.C. Seydak, Chief Postal Clerk of the 10th Marine Battalion, used contrary to regulations on this occasion and thought to be the only recorded example from the Russell Islands, 1944 censored env. posted at A.P.O. 292, the island A.P.O., but with A.P.O. 93 return address, similar but later cover (by which time the latter A.P.O. had moved to the Treasury Islands) and four other covers one of which is registered.
