THE BRIAN HOUGHTON HODGSON NEPAL CORRESPONDENCE, 1837-1844.

The following nine lots comprise a recently discovered archive of long interesting letters from B.H.Hodgson (1800-1894), the noted orientalist and early author of books on Nepal and Tibet, who was the British resident in Katmandu from 1833 to 1843 (see D.N.B. entry), to Sir Herbert Maddock, the Deputy-Governor of Bengal from 1845 to 1849. All the principal letters have Prestamp "NEPAL" postmarks - none of which have been recorded by Hammond-Giles - and the oval "FREE" marks are entirely new to us. This "find" provides a rare opportunity for collectors to acquire rare early letters from this fascinating part of the world. N.B. All these covers are addressed to Maddock in Calcutta..
