MILITARY MAIL, INDIA - THE WAR IN GWALIOR; 16th/18th Dec. 1843 EL's (2) sent "Free" from a "T(?). Edwards" (both signed on the front) to Calcutta ((both with fair red arrival marks on the back) ex "Camp Kutkovah" and "Camp Munneeah". The first with long contents ref. Gwalior politics and the ongoing Campaign ("...the Dada is on his way here under an escort - as his being given up is as yet the only bona fide demand we have made on the Gwalior Govt., & to enforce which we have brought together this great Army, we all hope that, now it has been complied with, the Army will halt & not advance for the present one step further."; the second (from the same man) includes; "The Dada is under a guard...within ‡ a mile of our Camp....he [will be] confined in the Fort of Agra...I have now sent a Staff Sergeant's Tent for the Dada's accommodation, & he will this evening proceed to Agra..." The Enemy retreated during the night and are now said to be near the Jehlum River which is some 16 or 17 miles ahead of us."); plus similar 22nd Feb. 1849 "Free" env. (+ contents) from "Camp Goojerat" to Calcutta (fair arrival marks) from the same writer ref. the Battle of Gujrat on the previous day; "At last we have had a great Battle with the Sikhs and ...have given them a thrashing as good as they ever had...Their loss was very great; my brother counted 88 bodies in one place. We have parked [i.e. taken] upwards of 40 guns and there are more coming in. We routed their entire Army and they fled en masse towards the Jhelum; they were pursued by our Cavalry for about 12 miles and their slaughter was great...Gilbert's Division started in pursuit of them this morning & we follow at 12..." A fascinating and detailed, breathless account of this Battle which ended the War and led directly to the annexation of the Punjab (on 12th March 1849). Plus a letter (no env.) from "Camp Gujerat" also dated 22nd Feb. 1849 with good contents; "...I have about an hour ago counted 42 captured Guns in our fort, two of which were our own...four o'clock [p.m.] has struck...", 2nd Feb. 1849 env. 1st AFGHAN WAR - LETTER FROM THE BRITISH GARRISON IN CABUL, SENT TO SIMLA; 15th Sept. 1839 EL (minor stains clear of address on front) from "James Atkinson" (a superintendant surgeon?) at "Balla Hissar, Caubul" with native endorsement on the top flap and what appears to be a manuscript postal rate ("13/."?) on the front. Addressed to "T.H. Maddock Esqr., Offl. Secy. to the Govr. of India with the Governor General, Simlah", having interesting contents; "Now that Afghanistan is conquered....A few years of good government and regular payments to the Afghan forces will do wonders. That fellow Jubal Khan, on his return from Ghuzneee, had painted us in such odious colours at Caubul, that every female...was driven from the town on our approach....The upper Balla Hissar, where royalty used to be blinded and incarcerated, is a perfect ruin..." Rare letter from the recently victorious British forces who were to fare so badly two years later. Rare thus. 1st AFGHAN WAR - LETTERS REF. THE "PEACE" FROM LORD AUCKLAND (GOV. GENERAL OF INDIA) HIMSELF; 1840 autograph letters (3; no wrappers) entirely written and signed by "Auckland" (who received an earldom for the "success" of the Afghan War in 1839, only to be recalled for the fiasco in Afhghanistan in 1841!) to "W.B. Bayley" (18th April & 11th June), Chairman of the East India Co. Court at the time, and to Sir Jas. R. Carnac (7th June), the Governor of Bombay at the time. The long personal letters (marked” Private") reveal the deluded Earl's belief that all was, and would remain, quiet in Afghanistan; [18th April, 14 pages] "...all is tranquil within our frontiers, and that by the last accounts, of the date of March 28, there was peace throughout Afghanistan...there is apparently no relaxation in the efforts of Russia to establish her influence in Central Asia....Nepal is engaged on a great marriage ceremony...I am hard pressed every moment of the day..."; [7th June, 4 pages] "...[praises Capt. Haines at Aden]...[relays news from China;]...there were speculation and impatience, as there would yet be for two months, for the arrival of the main Expedition [for the 1st Opium War]...more alarm and trepidation in the North West [of India] than I think that facts have altogether justified, and I am glad to have had a few lines from Sir Willoughby Cotton by which I learn that the reports of the Ghilzye insurrection were grossly exaggerated. The letters from Cabul still talk of the Russians, though with less alarm than they did, as being at Khyva..."; [11th June, 7 pages] "...There has been trepidation in Afghanistan and we must look for the frequent recurrence of uneasiness at least until the Khyva business shall be settled and the Sikh frontier determined...[mention of the first part of the British Forces having reached Singapore en route to China]..." An important and historical group of letters from the man directly responsible for all the British actions during the 1839-41 period of the 1st Afghan War. (3 letters).

1st AFGHAN WAR - LETTERS FROM THE GOVERNOR OF BOMBAY TO THE CHAIRMAN OF THE EAST INDIA CO. WITH NEWS FROM "CABOOL", ETC.; 28th March 1840 -28th Feb. 1841 long series of letters from W.B. Bayley to Sir J. Rivett Carnac with much news of Afghanistan, the Russian/Persian troubles, the progress of the 1st Opium War in China, etc., etc. From the same recent "find" as the previous lot. An important insight into the thinking of the senior Anglo-Indians at the time; including enclosed copies of some letters from the Governor General, Lord Auckland, and an important enclosed contemporary "Extract of letter from Sir Wm. McNaughton to Sir J.R. Carnac Bt., dated Cabool Septr. 25 1840" which refers to a recent "disastrous defeat of Major Clibborn's detachment...we shall never gain any profit by waging war with these savage mountaineers....I begin to apprehend that the defeat of Dost Mahomed was not as complete as we originally supposed. It appears that he rallied his force in the neighbourhood of Sygher (about 30 miles from Bamean) where he was by the last accounts encamped...The heads of the tribes came into Cabool some days ago...We have therefore deemed it right to send out a force under Genl. 1st AFGHAN WAR - SOLDIER's LETTER FROM THE BRITISH GARRISON IN "GHUZNEE"; Rare 30th Sept. - 1st Oct. 1841 EL (worn folds and faded address but intact) from a soldier with the "27th Regt., N[ative] I[nfantry], Ghuznee, Afghanistan" to "Lisburn, Co. Down, Ireland. Per overland dispatch via Bombay & Falmouth", unusually endorsed "Paid 12 annas, Ghuznee October 1st 1841" along the top flap (rare thus), charged "1/-" on arrival in Ireland with fine red oval "INDIA" mark and fair Lisburn c.d.s. on the front. The contents include; "...I am going to send you a set of prints, which will shortly be published, of the people & scenery of Afghanistan...Dr. Lord, a political Agent in this country, was murdered by an Afghan some months ago; the murderer was caught but Sir. W. M[cNaughton] having discovered that - according to the Mahommedan religion - it would be considered lawful for the man to kill one he considered an infidel, let him off Scot free..." Rare thus; few letters from this period of the Afghan Occupation are known; the writer may well have perished in the Khyber Pass Massacre before this letter reached Britain. PAPERS RELATING TO THE COURT MARTIAL OF COL. SHELLEY, ONE OF THE CABUL HOSTAGES, ETC.; Nov./Dec. 1842 (?) letters (3; no wrappers) sent on the Governor General of India, Lord Ellenorough's behalf by his Private Secretary Sir "H. Durand" to T.H. Maddock (Deputy Governor of Bengal), asking for various papers connected to "the conduct of M[ajor] Gen[eral] Shelton", etc.; one specifically requests "The Memorandum found among the effects of the late Maj. Gen. Elphinstone. The Letter from that Officer to the Secretary to Govt. dated 23rd Feb. 1842 and the Memorandum that accompanied it.", etc., etc. Maddocks' pencil note shows that several of these documents had not been seen in his office! Shelton, one of the handful of Cabul hostages who survived, was court martialled after his return from captivity (held in Cabul from Jan. to Sept. 1842); he was honourably acquitted. Rare documents. 1st AFGHAN WAR - MISC. PAPERS; 13th Sept. [1842] letter (no env.) from "Don. Macleod" (perhaps with the British Forces at the gates of Cabul? - the town was re-taken, and the hostages freed, on 15th Sept. 1842); he writes, regarding a medical report about the 13th Regiment, "I think he has gone too far in prejudging what the effects of the climate of Cabool may be on their health. They are for the most part dissipated men who had suffered much bad health from the effects of drunkenness & a tropical climate before they went on this expedition....It is therefore a question whether they are not likely to be more effective in Cabool than in Bengal..." Plus Maddocks' expenses claim for accompanying the Gov. General to Loodianah for a week in Nov. 1842, and a c.1845 manuscript report of the career of Capt. Barston (37th Reg.) who had been severely wounded in the 1839 Afghan Campaign. (3 items).
