| PITCAIRN ISLAND | ||||
| 957 | VERY RARE PRESTAMP COVER POSTED FROM VALPARAISO VIA PANAMA ; Remarkable March/May 1855 env. (minor creasing) to Brighton being endorsed back and front (by the addressee presumably); "Description of Pitcairn Island ..." and "Death of King Kameihamhi & Pitcairn's Island ". Posted from "Valparaiso, March 31st 1855" (almost certainly from a British Naval Officer, whose ship had just put into port after a cruise round the Pacific Islands), charged "2/-" with a mostly very fine "PANAMA/22AP1855" d.s. on the front; having London/Brighton arrival datestamps of 22nd May on the reverse. Plus a "Bartlett" print of "Hurst Castle". Although the contents have not survived, it is clear that this envelope enclosed a letter written during a visit to Pitcairn and Hawaii (the King mentioned was very likely King Kamehameha III who was depicted on the Hawaii 1853 issue). Further research would very likely reveal who the writer was and what his ship was. Very few letters of any kind connected with Pitcairn prior to 1900 have survived. Very rare. (2 items).
