| 131 | LIMERICK - BRAZIL PACKET LETTER LANDED THERE AS AN EMERGENCY & FORWARDED VIA DUBLIN; 9th Jan. 1840 EL (v. fine "RIO JANEIRO" c.d.s. on front) to Birmingham "p. H.M. Pkt. Skylark direct [to Falmouth]", charged "5/6", but most exceptionally having a fine red Dublin 5th March 1840 diamond d.s. on the back . It is recorded that adverse weather & bad winds forced the Packet "Skylark" to drop off the mail at Limerick on 4th March 1840 during this voyage; she finally reached Falmouth on 13th March, so this letter saved at least a week by going "overland" across Ireland on this occasion. | 132 | Similar 1st Oct. 1840 EL (minor wear) from "Vera Cruz" (Mexico) to Bordeaux "Pr. Packet Skylark" but with very fine Dublin 29th Nov. 1840 diamond d.s. on the top flap, though with v. fine red boxed London "Packet Letter" on the front and charged "3/2" etc. This cover was carried on the same sailing as the cover illustrated by Robertson on p.D38B which had a "COVE/SHIP LETTER" mark cancelled by a London Foreign Branch "Crown" mark as well as a 29th Nov. 1840 Dublin d.s. It is recorded (see included p. copy of Jan. 1960 Robertson "Philately" article about his cover) that the Skylark's commander took the mail into Cove on 28th Nov. 1840 because of bad delays due to awful weather, hence the Dublin d.s.
