SEYCHELLES
878 RARE EARLY MENTION OF A VISIT TO THE "SEYS CHELLE ISLANDS" IN A PRESTAMP LETTER FROM MAURITIUS ; 4th Dec. 1829 EL (some folds reinforced with hinges, etc. and worn crease through address panel) from "Mauritius" addressed to Eton (Bucks.) with a 60% very fine "[MAU]RITIUS/[PO]ST OFFICE" mark and "1/2" arrival charge on the front, beside a very fine scarce boxed "INDIA LETTER/SWANAGE" (Rob.In.1; only known for 1830 in black - just crossed by crease at left). The letter is written and signed by the Blind Traveller, James Holman (1786-1857; see Dict. of Nat. Biog. entry), who travelled round the world in 1827-32, publishing his story in 1834/5. This letter was previously written up as being a description of travel in the West Indies, but Cavendish's describers have taken the time to transcribe the (understandably) terrible hand-writing, and revealed that it describes a journey in the Indian Ocean! To quote; "I am lately returned from a voyage through the Mozambique Channel, visiting the shore of Madagascar and the east coast of Africa, the Islands of Johannah and Mohileh [two of the Comoro Islands] located (?) to the northwest of the equinoctial (?) line, after which to several of the Seys Chelle [sic] Islands, returning here 31st of Octr. [1829]..." Important early reference to the Seychelles from one of its earliest literary visitors. Nice Page One item for any Seychelles display. PHOTO - £400
