| 797 | SIERRA LEONE/ASCENSION - PRESTAMP LETTER REF. ANTI-SLAVERY OPERATIONS, ETC.; Interesting 30th Sept. 1844 EL from "H.M.S. Ardent, at Sierra Leone" to Maldon Essex (family letter) with London "SHIP LETTER" charged "8" on arrival. The contents (apparently from the ship's surgeon) describes operations off the West African coast to stop the slavers sending Negroes to Brazil or Cuba, and a brief visit to Ascension. "...There are about 5,000 Negroes there [the River Gallinas, S. Leone, where the ship was to steam the next day], waiting for a chance to be taken to Brazil or Cuba. The "Growler" is there and has just sent in her second prize, a notorious fast schooner....Free Town is by no means a bad sort of place....It is like St. George's Town, Demerara...The good folks at Ascension did their best to make us ill; they gave us 5 tons of stinking water, almost black; consequently we all got the Belly ach[e]...The surgeon there gets £300 a year...I called on the Governor of Sierra Leone yesterday, Dr. Ferguson; he is a black man and an Edinburgh M.D. and Surgeon of the Garrison....I have been to 3 little villages inhabited solely by the liberated Africans....Wellington, Kissey and York...You must direct "Ascension or Sierra Leone", and then there will be a remote chance of my getting a letter....They [at Ascension] gave us a Turtle before we left....all the ship's company (150) dined off it; you can imagine it was none of the smallest..."
