THE SAILING OF THE "FRANKLAND PACKET"; March 1710 "London Gazette" newspaper (7x12 ins.) with paragraph on p.2; "This is to give Notice, That the Frankland Packet-Boat, now at Biddiford, will be ready to proceed, wind and weather permitting, for the West Indies, with the Letters and Packets that shall be ready on Thursday the 29th of this Month". Notice ref. the new dates and routes for the Mail Packets to Jamaica, the Leeward Islands, Barbados, etc.; the changes made after pressure from the "West India Merchants" in London. Plus a long notice ref. the penalties for evading quarantine at British ports; "...If any person shall knowingly or wilfully conceal from the officers of quarantine, or clandestinely convey any letters or goods from a ship under quarantine, or liable to perform it, the penalty is death"!! DAVID HOPE; 1809-11 series of 4 EL's (some worn and with other faults) written to his parents/brother by this British naval officer while on the West Indies patrol service and taking Guadeloupe from the French; the first (May 1809) written from "New Exchange Coffee House, Strand, London" (just landed from H.M.S. Powerful after service in India; listed as "sick"); 12th Mar. 1810 from "H.M.S. Freija, Guadeloupe" (with red "FALMOUTH" mark, etc.) mentioning his part in the recent British capture of the island (with p. copy of the Captain's report mentioning Lieut. Hope's heroic part in the attack, and giving Hope's own description of the events); 19th Apr. 1810 EL - fair oval "SHIP LETTER/(Crown)/LIVERPOOL" mark - from "H.M.S. Freija, Tortola" ("...there is no chance of doing anything now as the French have not a single Island in their possession in this Country..." and hoping for better luck on the home station in due course); and battered 4th Mar. 1811 EL (full transcript) from "H.M.S. Macedonian, Lisbon" giving details of a Court Martial, recent French successes, etc. Rare insight into the life of a British Naval Officer on the West Indies service during the Napoleonic Wars. Freija, Island of St. Thomas" to Hope's brother in Scotland with almost very fine green Falmouth "LEEWARD ISLAND/F" datestamp on the front; good contents ref. his prospects for promotion to a Captaincy etc.; "...we are now taking a turn round all the Islands which are under this Admiral's Command; it is rather a pleasant voyage as there are no prizes now to be got in this country...." 474 AMERICAN WAR OF 1812 - CAPT. DAVID HOPE LETTERS FROM THE BRITISH BLOCKADE, INC. "AMERICA/F" D.S.; 1813/4 pair of EL's (some dusting & minor faults) from Hope (now a Captain following his heroics at Guadeloupe!; see previous lots) to his brother in Scotland; the first with partly fine green Falmouth "AMERICA/F" datestamp on the front (date error; "AU" for "SE"), and the other posted on arrival at Portsmouth:- headed from H.M.S. Shelburne at "Halifax" (Nova Scotia) and "Cruizing on the Coast of America". Interesting comment on the American War from a British perspective; "...I have therefore taken the Schooner [though badly manned] with a hope of making a little prize money before the American War is over..." and "...[I] was fortunate enough to Capture the American Sloop of War, the Frolic, in Company with the [H.M.S.] Orpheus Frigate, which will make me about £200 prize money should she get safe into port. I am now going to cruize off New Orleans in the Gulf of Mexico....and then return to Bermuda..." Rare letters from this important naval blockade of America. (2 letters). PHOTO - £240
