ENGLISH SHIP LETTERS - BRISTOL TO DOVER

THE "ALAN ROBERTSON" SHIP LETTER PAGES
Many of the Lots in the following sections of British Ship Letter markings came from a series of very large albums with extra-large pages that were compiled in the 1960’s by the late Alan Robertson, the author of the definitive work on these marks, "The Maritime Postal History of the British Isles". John Gunn acquired the albums intact some twenty years ago and has retained the original captions and pages wherever possible. These covers (and many others to be found in the overseas lots later in this catalogue) are mounted and written up in Alan Robertson’s distinctive style, using black card with black & red captions. In many cases – like the page illustrated intact here (see lot 1) – Robertson has added fine Victorian prints of the ports at which the letters were landed, alongside the covers (exactly as he did in the Ship Letters section of his book). Where the descriptions mention "Bartlett" and other prints, these almost invariably come from the Robertson albums. The empty albums (with many pages ready to re-use) are offered as a lot at the end of the auction.
