Signed by "J.H. Cook", sent to a Major Home at Haddington (Scotland) with a fine black Rob.S5 "LONDON/SHIP LRE" and "8" charge on the front. He describes the poor winter quarters at Oudenarde, the sickness of the English Infantry, the various regimental manoeuvres, etc.; inc. "30th [Sept. 1793] the French during the night were surprised in Marchiennes by the Austrians who took 1500 prisoners and fifteen pieces of cannon..." The document bears 'Policy' duty stamps of 25/- and £5, impressed on blue paper. The policy was issued by the Sea Insurance Company of Scotland. A fine document. £50

213 "AWFUL WRECK AT SCILLY" - THE MAIL STEAMER 'SCHILLER'; 7th May 1875 Contemporary broadside ballad (1p., 10"x7&Mac189;", light folds) with woodcut of paddle steamer above the heading "Awful Wreck at Scilly, and loss of 312 lives!". Below are twenty verses describing the incident when the 'Schiller' went aground off the Scilly Islands whilst on passage from Quebec to Hamburg. No imprint but content suggests it was locally printed in Cornwall. Scarce. PHOTO - £100
