QUADRUPLE-RATE 1st-ISSUE COVER TO G.B.; Remarkable 18th/20th Aug. 1865 mourning env. (with original contents) from "Tower Hill Barracks, Sierra Leone" to London (redirected to Kent and Devon) with S. Leone 6d lilac wing-margin pair and two singles (some faults at top; corner of RH stamp torn but turned under), all tied by transit marks and cancelled by fine "B31" numerals; charged "2" for redirection in England. The letter advises the addressee of his brother's recent death from "African Fever"; he had been a Lieut. in the 3rd West India Regiment (see following lots); the letter had originally forwarded some letters found in his papers, hence the high weight and postal rate. Very rare rate quadruple rate; multiple frankings of the First Issue are very seldom seen. Exhibition item.PHOTO - |

THE LAST (?) LETTER HOME FROM LIEUT. F. BENTHALL OF THE 3rd WEST INDIAN REGT. WITH 1st ISSUE 6d LILAC; 22nd June 1865 env. (faults but with original contents) from "Tower Hill Barracks, Sierra Leone...Still Alive" (endorsed on front of env.; a sadly prescient comment) to Kent (redirected to Devon), franked by S. Leone 6d lilac (minor perf. faults) tied by fine "B31" numeral, with red m/s "5" alongside and fine red "PAID/LIVERPOOL/BR. PACKET" c.d.s. on the front. The letter is rather sad, in the light of the fact that he was dead within a few weeks of writing it; "...I am almost worked to death just now; I have charge of a Company without a subaltern...my Company Sergeant is useless...I cater for the Mess and I am acting musquetry instructor...I draw about 16/- a day... out here barely covers my expenses." Plus an internal 1863 GB 1d Red EL to Lieut. Benthall invoicing him for all the military kit (over 50 items; from 1/- to £15, total £153-10s-6d) he needed for Africa; fascinating reading. (2 covers). REDIRECTED FROM SIERRA LEONE BACK TO G.B.; Unusual Aug./Nov. 1865 env. (minor edge wear & flap tears; with contents) originally posted from G.B. (6d lilac tied by Maidenhead duplex) addressed to Benthall at "Tower Hill Barracks, Sierra Leone, Africa" and with red handstruck "d1" Accountancy Mark on the front; redirected on the front to London, and then readdressed on the back to Kent with a manuscript "1" charge over a poor large "SIERRA LEONE" c.d.s. in black. Rare thus; it appears that there was no redirection charge for mail sent back from S. Leone to G.B. although there was always a charge for non-local redirected mail within G.B. at this date. Rare thus; posted from S. Leone and posted to S. Leone! PHOTO - see plate no 5A |
