This is the second and final part of this remarkable collection (see the full introduction on p.66 of Cavendish's April 2002 Catalogue). The lots that follow have been divided typologically but other topographical groups can be found elsewhere in the Catalogue (e.g. under Scotland/Ireland, USA, etc.) and one lot is to be found under QV Postal Stationery (1d Pinks). Some are, once again, the very items illustrated in "Adhesive Wafer Seals"; the 1996 book on this material, co-written by David Trapnell and Michael Champness..

PHONOGRAPHY (SHORTHAND): 1847-50 trio of envelopes to Shrewsbury, each bearing a 1d red adhesive and sealed by wafers (in blue, green & pink respectively) similar to the one in the following lot using the phonographic method of "Writing by Sound". (opened out for display) bearing 1d red ex Farnsfield (Notts. - with blue UDC of same) to London advertising "PHONOGRAPHY, or Writing by Sound, a new and truly philosophic method of writing all languages by an alphabet composed of signs that represent spoken sounds." with a fine brown/blue wafer depicting an example of same.
