IMPORTANT EARLY LINE-ENGRAVED COVERS

2355

UNIQUE? - EXTRAORDINARY 1d BLACK COVER POSTED FROM ITALY; 23rd Oct. 1840 E from "NEWCASTLE UNDER LINE" (Staffordshire - fair c.d.s. on reverse) addressed to the "Ship Hotel, Dover" and franked by a 1d Black (Plate 4; near 4 margins), tied by two fine orange-red Maltese Crosses. The letter was then redirected to "Poste Restante, Naples" (the second word being written twice, because the first time it was interrupted by the presence of the 1d Black). The letter was then apparently privately carried to Italy, from where it was posted 6 months later, with the 1d Black still in place (can this be the only recorded example of a 1d Black Used Abroad? - albeit it on a redirected letter). There is a faint "NAP. 1841/5. MAG" (Naples, 5th May 1841) claret datestamp on the front beside the stamp with a second address back-and-front; "Meaford, Stone, Staffordshire" (which was changed from a different, London, address before re-posting ), and the letter was then charged "1/7" overseas postage on its arrival back in England (on 19th May 1841; via Sardinia - "TS" - and France), with the red boxed "L.C.O./POSTAGE NOT PAID/TO LONDON" mark struck in London in transit, across the join on the reverse. The letter finally reached Stone on 21st May 1841 (fine c.d.s. on the front) where the addressee presumably paid the 1s-7d overseas postage due. Very rare thus; the only cover that we can recall having seen which was posted overseas when it already bore a 1d Black. Marvellous Exhibition item. PHOTO -
