** 916 A RARE COVER ADDRESSED TO THE REV. A. J. PIKE: c1895 undated env. addressed to "Rev. A.J.Pike/Namirembe" franked with 1895 (Nov.) 20 (c.) tied by a blue crayon cross. The adhesive is cut into or touched on three sides and the env. is stained. This is believed to be the first example of any correspondence to the Rev. Pike. This cover together with lot ..... were discovered in a collection sent to Cavendish recently and increase the number of recorded "Millar" covers from approximately 12 to 14. An item of great rarity and of historical interest. PHOTO - £1500
** 917 1895 (Nov.) narrow letter, narrow stamp in violet 20 (c) with m/s "C.M.S./Parcels/Dlc a/c" ? in the hand of the Rev. HR Teggart at Mityana. The stamp also shows the scarce "Z at left variety" caused when the "Z" ket was struck in error for the "|" key alongside it. Four margins but light crease and other small faults. Scarce. SG. 38var. ** 919 1895 (Nov.) narrow letters, narrow stamp 20 (c) violet with m/s "Parcels/Mityana/to/Kasaka/HRS/20 11 85" in the hand of Rev. H.R. Taggart who is known to have done m/s/ notes on the adhesives, but it is unusual for the complete journey to be written. Cut into on two sides and creased. SG. 38. PHOTO - see plate no. £100
** 920 THE UNIQUE COVER FRANKED WITH THE 20 (C) AFTER THE MILLAR ADHESIVES WERE DEMONETISED: 1896 (27 Nov.) env. from Richard H Leakey to the "Rev. H. R. Sugden/C.M.S./Mityana/Singo/Buganda" franked with 1896 (June) 20 (c) from the foot of the sheet with blue crayon cancellation. The upper flap of the cover is missing and other faults are evident. The adhesive is damaged at top & touched on two sides. The env. is dated in m/s "27/11/96" on reverse (the normal practice of R.H. Leakey. The date of the cover indicates a use later than when the Cowrie currency had been demonitised on 30th Sept. 1896. However the anna/rupee stamps printed by Rev. F. Rowling were not available until 7 Nov. 1896, a gap of six weeks. This recently discovered cover is belived to be the only example recorded with adhesives used during this demonitised period.
