AMERICAN WAR OF INDEPENDENCE - DETAILED REPORT FROM NEW YORK SENT VIA "CORK" TO SCOTLAND; Fine 25th Oct. 1778 EL (long detailed contents giving a pro-British New Yorker's view of military incompetence, etc.) from "New York" to Edinburgh with a fine "CORK" (light fold) on the front, a fair Dublin Bishop Mark on the top flap and varied rates up to a final "In [all] 1N1" charge. A rare transatlantic cover from the peak of hostilities between Britain and the Franco-American alliance. The contents include; "There is not a shadow of doubt but the late Commander [Howe] might have crushed this Rebellion by one month's active Exertion, from the time he landed at Staten Island till he relinquished the Command - nor is it impracticable by a well-directed exertion now. Of this, the Terror that Col. Butler - a partisan with a handful of men - has carried all around him, & his unresisted progress, wherever it was an object with him, is a sufficient proof...by the confession of some of the Rebells who have come in with Flaggs [of Truce]...Sir Henry [Clinton] is the generous, disinterested, ardent Hero....he often last winter, in the most tempestuous seasons, wrapped himself at night in a military Cloak, with a purse full of Gold which he secretly disbursed in the abodes of Distress... "Ten or twelve British Regiments, with three Companies of artillery, and five or seven provincial, with one Hessian regmt., including in all above 8,000 men are already embarked for an Expedition. The former it is supposed for the West Indies, the others for Augustine, Pensacola, &c...." Important Historical Letter in very fine condition. PHOTO - |
