IRISH POSTAL HISTORY - PRE 1922
RARE EARLY LETTER FROM DUBLIN TO LIVERPOOL SENT PRIVATELY FOR 6d OR A "QUART OF ALE"; 10th July 1611 EL (reinforced areas but complete and attractive) from a husband who has apparently skipped to Ireland (from "Ireland. At the Signe of the Half Moone at the caye [=quay] in Dublin you shall finde or heare of me"), telling his wife to sell up and join him (transcript included). The letter is attractively addressed; "To his loving wife Elizabeth Leach loving at Facit neare Whitworth this [be] d[elivere]d. Leave this with Oliver Mallis, porter in Liverpoole, to be sent as above said with care and speede". There are two intriguing deleted endorsements on the reverse; "Pay the bearer six pence" and "For my pains I must have a quart of ale"!! It seems that there was a dispute over the named porter's fee for delivering the letter. There was no Post Office service at this date. One of the earliest Cross-Irish Sea letters recorded and an Important Exhibition item. PHOTO - see plate no. £400
COMMONWEALTH PERIOD LETTER SENT "PER AMICI" FROM DUBLIN TO LONDON; Fine 5th April 1659 EL from "Dubline" addressed "For my lovinge Cosen Mr. Daniell Conney at the 7 Starrs on London Bridge, these" endorsed "per amici" [= per a friend] below the address. Rare example of the evasion of Anglo-Irish postage of 6d during the Cromwellian period, and a most unusual address. PHOTO - £200
DOUBLE-RATE 1664 BISHOP MARK COVER FROM "DUNCANNON" TO LONDON VIA "DUBLIN"; Fine 14th/27th May 1664 EL from "Duncannon Fort" neatly addressed to a lodgings "in Shandois Streete in Covent Garden at the Signe of the Globe, these, London", having a very fine London "MA/27" arrival Bishop Mark on the lower flap. There are two separate P.O. endorsements on the front; "Paid to Dublin 8d" and "Forward 1N", the latter being added en route at Dublin. Rare early postal Irish country-letter. PHOTO - £400
EARLY "DUPLICATE" LETTER SENT BY POST TO LONDON; 24th May 1672 EL from "Dublin Castle" (written & signed by "Deane [soon to be Bishop] Hackett") addressed to the "Sheriff of ye city of London..." having a clear "6" charge on the front and a very faint London arrival Bishop Mark (crease) on the flap. The contents concern the writer's imminent elevation to be "[Bishop of] Down and Con[naugh]t", and his consequent recent letter about this of which this letter was a duplicate due to "the possibility of letters failing" in transit. Interesting letter. £100
EARLY MAIL TO IRELAND FROM/VIA LONDON; 1713-92 covers all from London to various Irish towns with fine Bishop Marks except for one (1790) from "Vienne par Londres" which has a fine London Foreign Branch Bishop Mark, having varied arrival charges and the later ones (1786-92) with Dublin Bishop Marks. Other marks inc. fine London 1713 "TT" RH mark & near fine scarce 1786 red Dublin "Crown" Inspector's Mark. (5 covers). £120
THE VERY RARE "D" IN CIRCLE MARK OF DUBLIN/LONDON ON FREE FRANK COVER TO LONDON; Fine 27th Aug. 1718 EL from "Breck[ington?]" to London franked "Free Molesworth" with a m/s "6" Dublin-to-London charge cancelled and replaced by the London "squiggle" (? privilege or free?), having a very fine small black "D" in circle mark (15mm diameter) on the top flap and a fine "2/SE" London arrival Bishop Mark on the bottom flap. Only two other examples of this "D" mark are known (dated 1717 & 1719) and it is thought to be the precursor of the 1720-87 "DUBLIN" marks; they all occur only on Irish mail to/via London. Very rare early Irish cover and of Exhibition quality. [Ex F.E. Dixon.] PHOTO - £500
EARLY "COUNTRY" & "DUBLIN" MARKS; 1725 EL from "Castell Lough" (near Cork) to London with a partly fine "C.NTRY" and London arrival Bishop Mark on the side-flap, charged "10" (4d from Cork to Dublin plus 6d on to London). MARKING ON COVER TO SCOTLAND VIA DONAGHADEE; Fine 22nd Dec. 1744 EL from"Belfast" to Glasgow endorsed "Post pd 2d" and "In all 5d" on the front (2d prepaid to Donaghadee, 2d more by Packet to Port Patrick and 3d on from there). On the side-flap is a most unusual "Belfast" marking in MANUSCRIPT, which is clearly the P.O. marking, there being no handstruck marks on the cover. Few known. PHOTO - see plate no. £200
