278 PALAPYE STATION PROVISIONAL: 22 Nov.1899 Cape Government Railways printed env. addressed to Palapye Station bearing right hand half of a vertically bisected 4d (SG.35a) tied by Palapye Station c.d.s. with m/s initials ("AH") & "Postmaster" below. Cover is repaired at top right where a small piece bearing the adhesive & the m/s writing has been excised and subsequently re-affixed to rest of cover. Accompanied by photocopy of similar cover from the Royal Collection (which could well bear other half of the bisect) with pencil note stating that "There are 5 known examples of the 22 NO 99 bisects" (note: one realised c. £3,000 in Christie's Nov., '96 sale), 2 left & 3 right half. 313 3c ROSE-RED SMALL QUEENS ON COVER: Sextet of complementary 1871 covers each franked with one or more 3c rose-red small Quieen adhesives with numeral cancellations such as "45" of Perth and "21" of Goderich and two with fancy cork obliterations. Some faults but a useful group. (6 covers). £150
314 1871 (April 8) env. from Toronto to Montreal (arrival backstamp) franked with 3c small Queen adhesive on very thick soft paper (SG.81a.) obliterated with a light cork mark. This is believed to be the rare so-called "Shoemaker variety" known as "No. 4", the small quantity recorded being very poorly perforated and off centre; both problems are clearly exemplified on this stamp.
