| 942 | SPECTACULAR HONG KONG FRANKING COVER TO GERMANY WITH BOXED BLACK "HAINAN/SAMAH/LAND/POST" & 2-RING RED "HAI/SAMAH/NAN" MARKINGS; Most attractive 24th July 1894 small env. to Wilhelmshaven, franked by Hong Kong 1891 10c purple on red, neatly tied by two fine 9th August 1894 "HONG KONG/B" c.d.s.'s; with superb strikes of the black boxed "HAINAN/SAMAH/LAND/POST" mark (with manuscript "24/7/94" in centre) and the red 2-ring "HAI/SAMAH/NAN" mark nearby. There are fine "CUSTOMS/KIUNGCHOW" (7th Aug.) and "WILSHVN. ANK." (15th Sept.) backstamps. Very rare example of this short-lived Hainan Island Local Post service on a cover to an overseas destination. Webb recorded only the "D'Almada" manuscript regd. cover to Jamaica (from which stamps may have been removed?), two Diercking covers to Germany and two stampless local covers from this Local Post. This is therefore one of only three Land Post covers recorded with Hong Kong frankings. The last auction record of one of the Diercking covers that we have traced was of Sept. 1992, when the "Bartlett" cover (much less attractive than the one offered here) fetched HK$77,000 (£5,833 at that date). This is arguably the most Important Exhibition Item in the Norman Bennett Collection. Superb. | 944 | THE VERY RARE "D.29" CANCELLATION ON 3c HONG KONG POSTAL STATIONERY CARD TO G.B.; 6th Oct. 1883 usage of the Hong Kong 3c brown Postcard to London (from "H.M. Consulate, Hankow, China" asking for "the price of the set of Mulready envelopes" - addressed to Stanley Gibbons & Co.!), cancelled by a very fine strike of the very rare small "D.29" numeral (Webb Type A) on its own, having a very fine 9th Oct. "A/SHANGHAE" c.d.s. and mostly fine 14th Oct. "A/HONG KONG" c.d.s. on the back. Webb only recorded 2 covers with the D.29 mark alone and a further 4 undamaged covers/cards also cancelled with Shanghai's "S1" cancel - Pearson recorded a further 2 covers & 2 cards, but did not specify if any were cancelled with the D.29 alone. A similar D.29 card to Bordeaux fetched HK$149,500 [c.£11,782 at the time] at auction in Nov. 1994, and a cover to Rome sold for HK$440,000 [c.£36,000 at the time] in Oct. 1990. There was no D.29 cover or card of any kind in the Chris D'Almada Collection. One of only a handful of known "D.29 alone" covers and a Major Exhibition Centre-piece. Rare provisional Regd. label usage; only one other such cover believed to have been recorded, dated Dec. 1918. PHOTO - | £500 | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

HK c.d.s. Rare HK Forwarding Agent's Cachet; recorded by Webb (p.224) only for Oct. 1844 to Oct. 1845 (this cover); early HK F.A.C.'s such as this are rare - only one other firm is recorded by Webb as having used one earlier than this. | 950 | DAMAGED IN TRANSIT COVER TO G.B. VIA HONG KONG & MARSEILLE; Unusual 14th April 1846 EL (contemporary damage to address panel, affecting contents, consistent with some kind of accident to the mail bag in which it traveled) sent "per Torrington" (via Chusan, Ningpo & Foochow) from "Shanghai" (fascinating contents ref. trade in China and the state of cheeses from England destined for the Governor, etc.! - full typed transcript) to "T.F.Sellar Esqr., Messrs Da.....[Dav]idson & Co., L...." but endorsed "p. Overland Mail via Marseilles" and charged "1/10", with a fine 23rd (?) May 1846 "HONG KONG" c.d.s. on back, arriving London 23rd/24th July 1846. On arrival in London, the P.O. puzzled over the incomplete address, failed to find the addressee at a couple of London addresses and then endorsed it "Try Liverpool", where it seems to have found its addressee. Transit marks include a faint boxed "POSTAGE NOT PAID/TO LODNON" and "L" in circle (also of London). A puzzle for the student of Maritime Shipwrecks??! | £100 | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| 951 | PRESTAMP COVER TO U.S.A. Also on the front is a fine to very fine strike of the very rare Webb Type 1 "SHANGHAE POST OFFICE/(Crown)/PAID" mark in that P.O.'s distinctive watery red ink (slightly affected by transit charge-mark and part of the "Revd. Chaucer" annotation), and a near fine orange-red framed Hong Kong "PAID" (Webb Type 10 - used on transit mail such as this) with a red crayon "1/-" rate. There is a poor "5AU5" (?) Hong Kong c.d.s. and an 11th Dec. "SHIP LETTER/SYDNEY" c.d.s. on the reverse; the latter matches the cancelled handstruck "3" charge (NSW arrival Ship Letter rate) on the front, which was changed to "4" and then "5" for delivery to Maitland. Webb recorded this cover in 1959 (p.309 - typo error gives date as "1846" in error) as one of only three examples recorded at that date. Since then, Pearson has recorded a further seven, but this cover remains the earliest recorded example (see HKSC Journals 256/8). One of the great Treaty Ports P.H. Rarities.
