| 708 | 1st AFHGAN WAR - THE VERY RARE "INDIA SOLDIER &c/3/BRISTOL" CHARGE-MARK ON PRIVATE SOLDIER's CONCESSION RATE COVER; 21st Dec. 1838 EL (reinforced folds etc. do not affect address sheet) from "Camp on the Line of March" to London, headed and countersigned for "Joseph Spriggins (No.764), Private, Her My's 16th Lancers", with a partly very fine but totally recognisable strike of the very rare large circular framed "INDIA SOLDIER &c/3/BRISTOL" mark (Rob.In.Sol.1 or BS352 - recorded "1838-9") nicely placed on the front, beside London's red "G:P" local post mark. There is a 12th Jan. 1839 Calcutta mark on the reverse. It may be that this one cover has given rise to both the 1838 and 1839 reports of this scarce Bristol mark. We are not aware of any other examples being extant. The contents are highly significant, being written on the march to "Candahar in the Cabul Country bordering on Persia". The letter is endorsed "Army of Indus" on the back, and the contents reveal that a large British force is en route from Meerut to Afghanistan; "Our Regiment is now on one of the greatest Campaigns that ever was taken by Troops in this Country. We are now nearly two months on the March from...Meerut. We have upwards of one Thousand miles before we reach our destination..." Doubly rare Exhibition item, being an exceptionally early letter from the Afghan Occupation Force and bearing one of the rarest of all British Maritime marks.
