487 1789-1826 Trio comprising 1789 EL from Bath to the "Mr. Parfitt, Register" at Wells, originally containing a will & endorsed "2/6" in m/s (fifteen times the 2d rate!), 1791 EL to Penrith endorsed "7/-" in red m/s (fourteen times the 6d rate for 3‡ ounces?) and 1826 EL from Glasgow to Edinburgh endorsed "20/5" (thirty-five times the 7d rate!!). A good trio of outrageously high prestamp postage rate items. £120

489 FIRST DAY UNIFORM PENNY POST COVER REDIRECTED FROM THE FOURPENNY POST PERIOD WITH M/S "4" AND "2": Remarkable 7th-10th Jan. 1840 EL posted first from Helstone (sic), Cornwall to Wadebridge with m/s "4"; latter crossed through (presumably paid by the forwarder) in transit on to plymouth with a near fine "WADEBRIDGE/O" UDC, a fine "BODMIN/JA 10/1840" c.d.s. & a black (unpaid) m/s "2". 543 INDIA - OVAL "Ship Letter" MARKS ON MAIL WRITTEN ON BOARD EAST INDIAMAN SHIPS AT SEA; Unusual 1801/7 trio of EL's written at sea on board E.I. "Indian Chief", "Prince of Wales" and "Taunton Castle", having mostly fine to very fine oval "Ship Letter" or "Ship Lre" marks of DOVER, PORT GLASGOW & DEAL respectively. One also has near fine red fancy "Postage to London/Not Paid" mark. The ship "Prince of Wales" only made this one successful voyage; she was wrecked off C.G.H. on the return trip from India! Scarce lot; it is hard to find such early letters written at sea. (3 covers). £120

546 LIVERPOOL - RARE FANCY HANDSTRUCK "2/-" MARK STRUCK DURING THE RETALIATORY RATE PERIOD ON COVER EX U.S.; 16/30 Aug. 1848 home-made long env. (collector's label-stain at bottom left of address) to Yorkshire endorsed "Per America from New York August 16/48" along the top of the address with American pencil "48" charge at top left, but also having a mostly very fine strike of the short-lived Liverpool "2/-" mark (Rob./Tab.M72; "very rare" - only 1847-8) on the front, matching the very fine "AMERICA/LIVERPOOL" c.d.s. on the top flap. ON OUTGOING "INDIA PACKET LETTER" COVER TO INDIA; Fine 1818 EL from "Edinburgh" posted to Madras from London, endorsed "p Ajax" with a mostly fine 2-ring "INDIA SHIP LETTER/(Crown)/G.P.O/LONDON" c.d.s. (Rob.In.2) cancelled by a very fine black "Crutched Cross" Inspector's Mark with a mostly very fine "(Crown)/INDIA PACKET LETTER/G.P.O/LONDON" c.d.s. (Rob.In.P4) alongside; the charge has been changed from "1/2" to "3/6", so it seems that the "P. Ajax" endorsement was overlooked at first and that that ship was a Packet ship. 556 AUSTRALIA - TASMANIA: 1856 (10 Dec.) env. to Launcseton franked by a cut-to-shape 6d lilac tied by a fair Fareham "291" numeral with fine blue "PORTCHESTER" UDC & v.fine red London "1d" accountancy mark (1d credit to Tasmania from the 6d) both on the front, having an overstruck Launceston diamond "SHIP LETTER INWARDS FREE" d.s. on the back. Scarce example of mail carried by the European & Australian Royal Mail Co. (on the S.S. European). Rare & attractive 6d usage. £80

Land", franked by a single & strip of three 1841 2d Blues (margins almost complete) tied by Portsmouth "625" numerals with fair red "SHIP LETTER/LONDON" c.d.s. on the front & partial 2nd type (sanserif) Hobart boxed "SHIP LETTER/LONDON" arrival d.s. on the flap.
