SOUTH AUSTRALIA
234 EARLY 2-RING ADELAIDE "ARMS" MARK ON COVER TO TASMANIA; 14th Aug. 1840 EL (contents ref. the writer's recently dishonoured Bank Bill!) from "Adelaide" addressed to "Parsonage, Evandale, V.D.L." (= Van Diemensland = Tasmania), charged "7"(d) on arrival, with a partly fine strike of the 2-ring "POST OFFICE/(Arms)/ADELAIDE" mark on the front. Rare destination at this early date; few pre-1841 covers of any kind are recorded for South Australia, and none are known prior to 1838. PHOTO - see plate no. £150
235 VERY RARE EARLY 2-RING "POST OFFICE/(Crown)/PORT ADELAIDE" MARK ON COVER TO G.B.; 4th Sept. 1841 EL (minor wear and dusting) to Scotland from "[Ship] Clydeside, Port Adelaide" (giving a seaman's first impressions of the young Colony - he preferred it to his home town of Port Glasgow! - and mentioning a ship recently arrived from England with bad scurvy among its crew), charged "Pd 6" (outgoing Ship Letter rate) and "8" (British arrival S.L. rate; v. fine London "SHIP-LETTER" on back) on the front, beside a surprisingly very fine strike of the normally unclear and rare 2-ring "POST OFFICE/(Crown)/PORT ADELAIDE" mark. One of the earliest recorded Port Adelaide marks. PHOTO - see plate no. £400
236 THE DEMISE OF THE 2-RING "POST OFFICE/(Arms)/ADELAIDE" MARK; 21st Dec. 1841 EL (headed "Adelaide, South Australia" above the address, but written from "Balcombe, S.A.") to Bath (G.B.) with usual "6" & "8" rates, having a fine black London "SHIP LETTER" mark on the flap and an unusually clear 2-ring "POST OFFICE/ADELAIDE" mark, but with weak lion/crown "Arms" device in centre. Plus 6th March 1842 EL from the same correspondence to Bath with red m/s "6" but no Adelaide mark at all (though having v. fine boxed "LIVERPOOL/SHIP" d.s. and matching h.s. "8" charge-mark; clearly the 2-ring mark had finally fallen apart and the new large oval d.s. (see next lot) was not yet available. Rare pair. (2 covers). PHOTO - see plate no. £150

PHOTO - see plate no. £120
238 VERY EARLY INGOING POSTAL COVER FROM OVERSEAS; July 1841 EL (minor wear, but incl. interesting comment ref. scurrilous rumours of the failure of the S.A. colony being spread in Britain) from "GLASGOW" (fine red d.s. on the front) to Adelaide endorsed "Via Liverpool" (with red m/s "8" for the prepaid Ship Letter rate), charged "6" on arrival (the inter-Colonial ingoing Ship Letter rate), having a partly fine 4th Dec. 1841 "SHIP LETTER/(Crown)/SYDNEY" transit c.d.s. across the join on the reverse.
